Who is the best batsman from your country with a Test Batting Average of under 40 ?

Molehill

Cricketer Of The Year
Stewart did average 44 as a top 3 bat and 46 as a specialist bat anyway. Frequently batting him in positions that didn't suit him and keeping workload sometimes even when he was batting top 4 shafted him.

Atherton averages mid-40s in Strauss' time. Especially without the back condition.
I suspect Atherton would've averaged well over 40 if he simply never came across a fella called McGrath!!

India is Kapil Dev. On song he was an unbelievable batsman.
Kapil Dev was the proto Gilchrist without his technique.... I don't think he would have averaged 40+. Vijay Manjrekar, Pataudi, Borde, Mushtaq, Rahane, Lala Amarnath and C K Nayudu are all much better choices imo.

I'm surprised even a Sri Lankan has not mentioned Gurusinha.

Worldwide. The ones that come to my mind are Stewart, Atherton and Gurusinha. And dare I say it, Cronje, he was looking good mode back in 1994ish.

this is where we disagree. Don’t get me wrong, all of those names may have been fine batsmen but anyone who saw Kapil’s innings in Port Elizabeth on a mamba with Donald running wild would know he had the technique and skills to average 40+ but frustratingly didn’t apply them.

Jimmy Cook and Peter Kirsten also worth a shout for talent.
True. I guess they qualify but tough on them that most of their tests were at 40 basically.

This is basically a Fuller Pilch level post and he does it as a gag.
You should have seen him play. Just as clueless as Gayle and Fleming were. And in 1993 he was snapped by Ramanayake and Gurusinha, both with similar pace. Probably had a weakness against medium fast swing bowlers.

He's right about Fleming being Vaas' bunny tbh. Shame about the ball tampering though.
Has 2 massive tons in SL and averages his normal home average against them in NZ. I remember one ODI series where he had a bad time, but that was ODIs so meh.

I'm not convinced.

Fleming was Vaas' bunny. Test and ODIs both. Especially in NZ.
In tests average 54 on that one massive innings of 270. In NZ he averages 33 when Vaas played.
In ODIs averages 17 when Vaas played.
Vaas didn't dismiss him enough in tests to call him his bunny
