Leach, Ahmed, Hartley - terrible England spin "attacks" in the SC

Kenneth Viljoen

International Regular
Only 26yo, was playing FC cricket in Zimbabwe before Christmas. Just get him working with Saqlain for a few months!
Thing is his Test record is not bad for a young spinner , 36 test wickets @ 33.97 and he was only 23 years old when he last played for England plus he can bat ..would fit into England's Bazball plans

His last four tests, all in the subcontinent in early 2021:

8-130 in Galle
4-125 in Galle
5-126 in Chennai
0-71 in Ahmedabad

I know he got cheap wickets in that SL series, but cheap wickets are better than none. It's obviously been a couple of lean(ish) years in county cricket and he moved around a bit in 2023, averaging 44 and 42 in 2022. But the talent is there if you can get it out of him.

An interesting one is the '84-'85 India series where they went in with Edmonds and a 38 year old Pocock as their spinners. On rather flat pitches they averaged 42 and 50 and England won 2-1 thanks to them putting in one good performance in the second test and Foster's 11 wickets in the fourth.

Yep.

I think Hussain said in a video. They don't look for batting averages. Rather than character.

England played Giles and Croft in the series wins in Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the turn of the century. Can't recall their numbers but they must've done OK.
I think they both did well enough, especially Giles iirc. Not that it matters terribly, but Salisbury played in Pakistan, was awful, and Croft replaced him in SL.

Funny how the memory plays tricks, because I assumed that their figures were better than that. Obviously I forgot their less effective matches in that series. Even allowing for Emburey and Underwood being unavailable, it does show that a lack of decent English spinners isn't a new phenomenon.

England have struggled to produce spinners of the required standard for decades now.

I can only recall Underwood and Swann who average 30 or under.

Even our better spinners, Tufnell, Emburey, Monty, average over 35.

Leach is underrated in my view. He has 124 wickets at 34. For an English spinner that a good effort.
Leach is our best by a mile, plus he keeps control usually. Certainly compared to Moeen he had control of the scoring rate apart from in Australia.

He got a solo Test match in India

Other forgettable LAS bowlers in India are Samit Patel and Liam Dawson
Dawson got 2-129 from 43 overs (exactly 3rpo) in an innings of 759-7d (the Karun Nair triple century). Mo - 1-190 from 41, Rash - 1-153 from 29. In England's first innings, Jadeja got 3-106 and Ashwin 1-151. Dawson's figures were fine.

Figures of 2 for 129 are utterly forgettable no matter how you try paint it.

When Ashwin got worse?
You're not even making a point now.

One bowler had slightly less worse bowling figures in a game compared to another. Here is some out of the box thinking for you. Maybe both bowling performances were utterly forgettable!

You seem to somehow think that Dawson getting a couple of wickets at a time when India were in total control is somehow a "fine" performance. He got his 2 utterly meaningless wickets after India were on 435 and 754.

Just save us both some time and admit you have a man crush on Dawson. That would at least explain why you think figures of 2 for 129 are "fine" vs forgettable.
