Also, have NZ just given up on hosting ODIs against anyone apart from BD, SL and India? I know the bilateral ODI is no one’s favourite format, but you have to go back to 2018 (!) for when NZ hosted anyone apart from these 3 sides.
This is insane...it looks like, according to the FTP, the next time anyone who isn't a subcontinent side plays ODIs in NZ is England in Oct 2025. Seven year gap

I dunno, it quite possibly is in ODIs. #3 probably still ideal but I think I'd sooner open with him than bat him 4 or 5 (which definitely isn't true in Tests).
I think he's a pure #4 in ODIs, and while I pop him as 1-4 cover I still don't think we see his best opening.

Ultimately though his main failing is him. At every level he has taken several years to truly assert himself to the performance we know is in there. Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls (in tests for several years) and even Michael Bracewell rose to the challenge despite being mid af at best in domestic cricket.

Young has a habit of peaking with 80s before clicking and dominating. It's part of why I think he was a poor choice to convert to opener to begin with - you need to let Young focus on what he's good at first before giving him additional challenges (captaincy at CD, opening here). His 80s in England and India kind of sum him up - he's more than capable, but he is his own limiter.

I don’t think we’ll see the best of Will Young at this level. He’s been a bit unfortunate to play in an era where NZ’s default picks are pretty much undroppable whether or not they’re in form (and being in the same age group, his time will be done too when the transition happens). But at the same time he needs Mitchell or even Phillips-like performances to get a sustained run, and hasn’t been anywhere near that. Definitely agree he’s been played out of position, but it’s either that or not getting to play at all.

The 2019 World Cup is a what if for him. He scored buckets against Australia in the warm ups but couldn't go to the tournament because he needed shoulder surgery as he couldn't throw from the boundary.

He was ready then, and his technique and talent would have been valuable on balanced pitches where the power hitting of Guptill and Munro came unglued.

He's ready technically now, too, but it's hard to comprehend a guy who has 6 Test 50s without a ton, 8 ODI 50s and 3 tons, 42 FC 50s and 15 tons, along with 23 List A 50s and 11 tons is going to remedy that. It's clearly who he is as a person and a player. Which sucks, I've always been a massive advocate of him as a player and I thought he could work out his conversion issues. Playing him as a Test opener unquestionably did nothing positive for him in terms of his mental game, which is all you can suggest his poor conversion rate is down to. His talent was poorly managed but he's had sufficient opportunities since then, and isn't doing nearly enough to supplant the guys around him

It's not inconceivable that there's a golden period in his future - certainly has the ability, franchises aren't interested in him (although he is playing T20 in England next year) and his NZ team mates will be absent at times on T20 duties. But sadly I'm not counting on it.

is bizarre, especially given touring Test sides tend to play other formats whilst there and saffers (21/22), Pakistan and windies (20/21) and England (19/20) have all played Test series in New Zealand past few years, and all but saffers played T20is whilst there

aussies playing just T20i series (20/21) I assume was ahead of the World Cup

I suppose isn't massively important to have played bilateral ODI series at home ahead of the 2023 World Cup, played FOUR series in India or Pakistan between September 2021 and 2023.... one was a one-off, another five (against Pakistan) Regardless, kiwis did better than the English! (when it mattered ie World Cup)
