Wait did Tassie actually drop Weatherald? I assumed he was out injured. He's so much better than most of their top order, frustrating as he can be.
I disagree. I saw most of his knocks this summer and he's looked in horrific form. He wasn't dropped soon enough if anything

Interesting to see him making some 2s runs though

Daniel Hughes dropped from the NSW Shield side.

Big call imo, not had a great Shield season to date but you can say that of almost the entire batting lineup pretty much. Blake Nikitaras seemingly in line to replace him

Yeah I don't think he deserved to go before McDonald or Hackney. Sangha still in the squad too even if he wasn't in the XI last hit.

Konstas in the squad too. Personally would've waited until after the BBL to blood him.

it’s absolute lunacy he’s the man dropped imo. What the actual **** are we doing? Irrespective of his numbers, he absolutely isn’t the first to go. NSW a ****ing shambles. Watch them blood Konstas and ruin him as well

If I'm Konstas I'm basically taking any deal from anyone that isn't NSW. He's just going to get ruined at this point. I know he has to get picked at some point and unlike some of the other kids has at least scored big Grade runs, but the current environment isn't right for him. Unfortunately I'm not sure what is the right environment for him beyond "going to a state where he can hide at 5/6 and not be seen as the golden child".

I think dropping Patterson was probably the right call - it's been a long time since he had a genuinely good season - but Hughes at least had a good enough 2022/23 and even started the season OK before the recent form slump. It's frankly baffling, 3 bad games should not be enough to drop someone when the alternatives were poor.

Yeah fully agreed on all the Konstas comments, kid is a good prospect but expecting too much of him too soon (especially in such a ropey batting lineup) is really just asking for trouble

The Greg Chappell "youth over everything" ideology really is a scourge on Australian cricket

Isn't it mainly just NSW doing that thoigh?
I'd say the thinking has influenced a lot of Australian cricket over the last 15 years, although guys like Wakim, Dean and Lehmann wouldn't be playing if youth really was everything.

FWIW picking MacDonald for example is a sign that even NSW have kind of moved on from it, but Hughes being axed is at best a huge risk.

Cricket.com just did an article on Webster making the PM XI and included a list of 15 top run scorers in the Shield since start of last season. Raises lots of questions for me so thought I'd drop it here

Jeez that’s a depressing list. Other than McSweeney and maybe Short how many of them do we think can develop into decent Australian cricketers?

Young fella coming out of WA looks promising surprised his name isn't on the list

his brother Mitch is playing for Aus currently

South Australia 2nds going alright against the ACT right now, got them at 5-52 in the last dig. Two wickets to Grant, three to Campbell Thompson, who IMO will definitely be playing FC cricket in the next 12-18 months

Fair few players who have played here playing for other teams this round. For Tasmsnia Weatherald is on 187 not right now, my man Timmeh Oakley also in the Tas side took 5 in the first innings. For ACT Hanno is captaining them now, had a good game with a few wickets and 60 with the willow in the first innings, Zac Worden playing too but he didn't go so well
Interesting treatment of Stockdale

Thought that he must’ve been injured as hadn’t been picked for a couple of games so looked him up

He’s been playing including this game

He’s rapid, a wicket taker & on target for another 60 wicket season
