Was this 201* against Afghanistan the best ODI innings ever

  • No, Saeed Anwar's 194 vs India was better

It was a decent Zimbabwean bowling attack tbf. Rawson, Curran, Fletcher and Traicos all pretty useful, and the match position of 9-4 (and then) 17-5 when Kapil came in isn't dissimilar.
WC was on the line for both teams, Maxwell had a bit of extra pressure cause he was chasing instead of batting first and was with the tail pretty much the whole knock, but dev's was unprecedented for his time. So was Maxwell's, tbf, but 175* when the average score is ~250 or less is a lot more meaningful IMO. Ide still take maxwell cause of the cramps and all, but can understand if someone went the other way. Particularly if your Indian.

Think the fact that it was a do or die match and India ended up winning the World Cup adds to the legend too (as does the lack of footage) .

For maxwell to do it in a chase is beyond ridiculous though.

In terms of legacy; yeah, Kapil's innings is better; as it directly led to India winning the cup, resulting in a boom in cricket popularity that ultimately led India to being one of the dominants. Even with loosing this match, Australia 90% would had still played the semis.....
But as for pure batting; I still can't get over Maxwell batting yesterday with those cramps; struggling to take singles even when the ball reached the boundary line; and scoring over a 2/3 of the runs in the chase. Though yeah, no footage exists of that innings; and I think this one, Gilchrist's 149, Richards' 189 and Kapil's 175 are all really close.

Don't disagree with any of that. Am disagreeing with the innings last night being dismissed as unworthy of comparison.
Actually it is only second to the Viv special. Hence unworthy of comparing with any other.

Migara unironically talking about unworthy second rate things is the content I'm here for.

Viv scored his against bowlers worse than '83 Zim or '23 Afghanistan

I love SL but they've only had like 5-6 dangerous bowlers ever

It’s Viv, Maxwell and Kapil all vying for second place imo.

Gilly’s was a step below in terms of match situation, drama and theatre and not top 5.

Best is probably Kohli’s 100 in the tri series chase against SL.

I wouldn't say the bowling of the English during Richards' 189* looks exactly crash hot from what's available. Rather similar to the Afghanistan they started very well when the ball was moving around and then bowled rather ordinary length - and often too much to leg - against a batsman who was really laying into that kind of bowling.
