Agree the number of competitive teams are just getting less every world cup cycle. It's pretty depressing seeing the gap between top 3-4 teams and the rest. I doubt if there is a future for international cricket in another 10 years?
T20s will keep them going. But league cricket will definitely become bigger no matter what.

Yup I can see cricket going the same way of other sporting codes. Leagues being the main form of consumption. If there aren't enough strong international teams fans of weak teams would prefer seeing their 1or 2 star players playing in leagues around the world.

Why would they bring him back and not get him to bat up the order? He has never been the guy to score at a 150+ SR in his prime and now he is primarily a Test number 4. I'm not saying it would have made a difference because the Indian bowlers were amazing but the thought process has to be questioned.
Sure. The position he bats in is not up to him.

I hope SL bounces back. This isn't great. West Indies and Zim have regressed. Bangla will forever be a minnow coz of their administration. SL is on a downward spiral. Some other minnows are coming up but cricket has a negligible amount of following in those countries.
they’ve been going downhill since 2015 World Cup. Now they don’t product many good cricketers back then you lost some the greats like Mahela, Kumar, Dilshan etc

They have good raw talent. Most of them don't progress much due to constant chopping and changing. They've been doing it since Sanga and Mahela retired. They had just randomly axed Mathews after the 2018 Asia Cup when they literally didn't have anyone of his calibre(the board gave no reasons for this, just used him as a scapegoat after their bad outings agains Bangla and Afghanistan), they keep taking these kind of moronic decisions.

this is rose tinted glasses. The gap was even worse when Australia and Windies were in their prime and I’ve never seen a World Cup with more than 5 realistically competitive teams.

The standard of the worst of the 'big eight' at any given time seems worse because there's a much smaller gap to the next tier. West Indies and Sri Lanka being a bit crap right now wouldn't be anywhere near as noticeable if Afghanistan and Netherlands couldn't give them a touch up.

I think the next World Cup will be interesting as it won't favour any one team. If India go on to win this, the last 4 will all have been won by the host, whilst 2 of those Finals featured both the host nations. Mind you, feels like this India team would be tough to beat on any pitch.

Also, whilst this competition has been horribly lacking in close finishes, there have been a number of upsets.

This India team will feel pretty old in four years. I can see Kohli being around if he wants to be given fitness and maybe Jadeja, but I think a lot of people will age out.

Australia, England, South Africa look old as well.

Could see a very strong Conway and Rachin led New Zealand

but other than that, the next World Cup feels pretty open and a good opportunity for a younger team to rise up
