Are fielders allowed to start outside the playing surface and then walk on? Would make those kinds of catches far easier.

EDIT: In that case though that's just a bad misjudgement
As far as I am aware, they have to be in the field of play when the ball is bowled.

Seriously,if you are at risk of touching the rope and giving away a six in a very crucial moment just throw it.

You'll lose the wicket but save the boundary and only concede a couple of runs instead of the maximum.
