Good point. Since 1992 WC , we haven’t made knockouts in 2 WC (1999,2007) and in both we lost to ZIM (99) and BAN (07) . So key to making knockouts is play good cricket and don’t lose to very weak sides
That Zimbabwe 99 side wasn't weak. It had quality allrounders and was up with Aus, SA, and NZ as a fielding unit.

Wonder how good a player Maxwell would have been with a regular brain
He’s a (very) flawed genius

As Watto said, those switch hits were unbelievable but he could have achieved the same results by just standing still and hitting them back over the bowler’s head

Much simpler & less risky

He's lucky he didn't get bowled by a couple of them. It's some kind of attention issue. He doesn't always play these shots to manipulate the field or target gaps, he plays them because he's bored.

Like I said this earlier, they'll have 3 men back to stop the switch hit and he'll keep playing it even if the field for the regular sweep is wide open

I bet you they won’t drop Stoinis or Green. They usually pick that extra all round bowling option no matter what
Marsh literally bowled ahead of Green this game, and Maxwell has been bowling full spells most games. They don't need Stoinis/Green overs
Warner
Head
Marsh
Smith
Marnus
Inglis
Maxwell

Straightforward
It will be this but Smith and Marnus will stay 3/4 with Marsh moving to 5

This is exactly how I see Maxwell as a cricketer. Incredibly talented but mostly he's just increasing his degree of difficulty with the shots he plays, rather than do them for bonafide reasons. I didn't see the game but I wouldn't read a thing into him scoring 100 off 40 balls against the Dutch. The way he bats is much less likely to hold up against better sides.

tbf he made a 50 ball ton in the semi final in 2015, which was the second most memorable thing to happen at the scg that day. But I agree it's almost like he deliberately takes the piss sometimes, as though batting isn't hard enough as it is (and it is, given his overall record which is good but not what you'd call off the charts). Weird player.

It's also interesting how with his bowling and fielding he does the opposite of taking the piss

Highly motivated and full of effort. Can't remember the last time I saw him drop a catch

But with batting, what's meant to be his primary skill, he can't be bothered batting properly sometimes

I've seen him drop a few catches. He's a very good fielder but a bit overrated IMO. He's nothing compared to the guys we had in the 00s

Fair enough. But yeah it always looks like he's giving 100%, in the area most players would probably say if they were prone to being lazy sometimes, it'd be in that area

I know what you mean. It's usually the opposite. Lazy in the field and at training, 100% focused on their own batting is usually the sign of a lazy/selfish cricketer.
