I'm probably guilty of that peak v longevity thing. On peak I'd put Fred ahead of Stokes as an AR but the latter obviously a better bat and as a cricketer wins on consistency over the longer term.

Not sure if we're permitted to consider captaincy but (so far) Stokes wins over Root by some distance (and Fred and Botham by some distance more).

Stokes has played 97 tests as a fast bowling all rounder. No one can use longevity against him.

He’s won many more matches for England.

If offered a straight trade for Root’s career or Stokes’s career, any selector would take Stokes.

This poll shows many people cannot look past a stats sheet.

Best ten England cricketers of the modern era (1970-) attempt

1) Botham
2) Root
3) Boycott
4) Anderson
5) Gooch
6) Stokes
7) Gower
8) Knott
9) Willis
10) KP

Wanted Snow in there but don't think he has the body of work if it's strictly 1970 onwards.

Edit: forgot Knott.

It's possible to have voted Root and still really rate Stokes. Both are obvious guns and England have been lucky to have had both. I think Root has been slightly more valuable though. He's held together a relatively weak batting unit for a decade. It'd have been an embarrassing period if he wasn't around.

Don't think I buy that Stokes has won "many more" matches for England than Root either. Root has loads of match winning knocks. Has more MotM awards than Stokes too.

Believe me I really rate Root, but I think Stokes is the most unique cricketer I’ve seen in the past decade.

He is a gun. Will have a good finish with the bat imo now his bowling responsibilities won't be there to drain him.

Yeah picking Root over Stokes is like picking Kallis over Marshall. No one in real life is doing it.

Agree with Root > Boycott but Anderson is #2. Freakish longevity and won England a series in Australia on roads (only series that matters for English cricketers). Pretty much won matches/series everywhere actually
