English Domestic Season 2023

Surprised to learn that he had played as many first class matches as that in the last two seasons. At least from afar, he never seemed to be there.

Malan rumoured to be renegotiating his Yorkshire contract to white ball only. Trying to prolong his England career and no doubt play lots of franchise cricket.
You can't really blame a bloke who is 36 from looking to maximise his short form career, given his first class best days are behind him and he's found himself to have had a successful international white ball career.

No and fair play to him. But this is going to be the future. We may see 2 codes of cricket.

I am a little sceptical that some parts of the world will continue to have lucrative t20 leagues. I think the money is too condensed in the 'big 3' for other leagues to continue to be that much of a success.

Offsetting this is that teams on several of the T20 leagues are owned by the well-financed IPL operations. Effectively the IPL is expanding, not directly, as I had anticipated, but by proxy.

While it is possible that we could see two codes of cricket develop, the split in personnel between red and white ball seems more advanced in England and West Indies than elsewhere. What would concern me more would be the expansion of the Will Smeed precedent - young players ignoring red ball from an early stage of their careers.

We're definitely going to see more Will Smeeds. But the tide should return from T20land, in all optimism, hopefully augmented by a big corruption scandal coming out (preferably about the IPL being rigged)

Oh I get your point that there are in effect proxy leagues in the Middle East and South Africa. However, I just don't see the same financial success continuing in other parts of the world. It is ok when you have huge baying crowds in India and the hundreds of millions tuning in. It is different when you are watching games overseas with not quite full grounds and not quite the Kohlis and equivalents playing in them.

I don't even really rate the Big Bash that highly and no I don't rate the hundred either, but there is enough financial success in both, at least in the medium term. Not convinced that there is enough to go around everywhere. In a pub a couple of months ago I watched a few minutes of the Lanka Premier League and it was dire. You play this out with second raters and not so full crowds then the bottom line is that these leagues won't attract the big money as time goes on. That's my opinion mind.

I don't really have an issues with the likes of Smeed doing what he does. I recall that he struggled dreadfully in second team cricket and wasn't even successful in List A. It is where very talented players who show signs of having the adaptability to succeed in all forms give up red ball stuff at an early stage where trouble emerges.

Slightly odd signing IMO, is he expected to play red ball cricket or just limited overs? Maybe they wanted another wrinkled and gnarly vastly experienced seamer now that Jack Brooks has retired (I think).
That’s what I thought when I heard this. Replacement for Brooks.

I thought the Test squad would go to UAE for their warm ups Nov/Dec and play against the Lions.
22 Lions players enough to play against each other.

We are half way though October and the Central Contracts have not been announced. Can't remember it ever announced later. Usually 1st Oct.
I suspect post World Cup a few names will be removed from the list.

Just wondering which 3 you're referring to, I suspect the SA Tournament is soon going to overtake the Big Bash. And is it Blast or Hundred in England?

I meant England, Australia and India generically and didn't really distinguish between the two tournaments in England.

Quite a number of the team are of an age where they are unlikely to play another 50 over World Cup, for which we have the ruthless Liam Plunkett precedent from last time. The picture is however a little clouded by the T20 World Cup next year for which many of the current team will still be in the frame.

Shoaib Bashir has been selected for the Lions on a grand total of six first-class games where he averages 67 with the ball. And why have the selectors abandoned Matt Parkinson in favour of Callum?
