TBF to Zampa he was reasonable in the first two matches of the recent S.A series. He's capable of bouncing back quickly because he's a talent,
but it's just not leaving the hand best for him atm. That 0/113 probably still hurting his ego a bit, but a good couple of matches could brush that off.

Whatever it takes!!!
Look, he's the main spinner. He's meant to do a job by at worst bowling accurately no mater where he is. It's not his raw numbers I'm talking about, I'm saying watching him bowl he's been very ordinary for a while now. He doesn't look like he's putting much energy on the ball. Given Lyon is injured and Agar (though not very good) has been ruled out as well, his role is massive and atm they're barely falling out of his hand.

I'm not saying to drop him during the WC because the cupboard is bare from a squad POV anyway, I'm just saying he's been poor for a while now.
Fair enough but your best option now is to back him. And honestly, wrist spinners struggle with consistency in general anyways.

Yeah there's no other option in the squad anyway. I'm not saying he needs to bowl as accurately and well as peak Warne, I'm saying he needs to bowl near enough to as accurately and well as peak Zampa. He's just not there rn. Unfortunately the pox of Victoria has infested him and there is very likely no way back now.

Lyons not gonna suddenly make this team better or change the result of this game unless we choose to bowl at the toss. Dew came on and changed the conditions for the spinners. Conditions also gave our pacers more to work with upfront and we bottled the game when we dropped kohli.
I thought it was a slightly odd decision to opt to bat first (the first time anyone has opted to do it so far). The dew would've totally negated the Indian spinners and made batting second against them easier.

I think this post below is just about right. However I'd still be ghosting some alternatives if things don't improve. Probably swap Marnus and Marsh in the order and think of replacing the underperforming Carey with Inglis. If room can't be found for Green then I think we could risk Abbott in his place. But I'd try swapping Maxie and Green as you say. There you have it. Marnus and Marsh swap as do Max and Green. Inglis for Carey and have Abbott on standby.

We really need another spinner and I'd go for the class of Lyon or Murphy over so called one day specialists. But if you wanted someone who offers a bit with the bat then I think Chris Green should be picked. I don't want to wish ill on anyone but we should never have picked Stoin in the first place.

The big difference in this match is where most feared it would be: India's spin options are too varied and strong. It is a part of the game we can't compete so will have to compensate for it somehow. Btw your post appears below mine because I initially picked another post in error.

You guys are overreacting. The loss of Agar and Head was very rough for Australia. If you compare the side they played today Vs what could have been.. its a stark difference.

Head Warner Smith Marsh Carey Maxwell Agar Starc Cummins Zampa Hazlewood - is a serious line up, 3 quality seamers and Marsh, 2 quality LO spinners plus Maxwell and Head. Loads of options... I have my doubts on Head and I think you would have seen Ashwin opening the bowling if it was Head and Warner opening the batting, but its still far better balanced for Indian conditions than what they have today.

And I will give Carey few more games, he has earned the credit. The last thing Aus should do is panic. Just get in another spinner who can bat, preferably a SLA and have Stoinis go back home and bat Green at 5 and Maxi at 7.

i agree with the marnus for marsh swap, if only because i feel marnus is the better compliment for warner than marsh is - both marsh and warner like being on strike and feeling bat on ball to the point where i feel like it's unlikely they'd fire together in the same game

green chucks it but if they let him bowl he's probably the guy that they'd want, given he's a limited overs specialist and has a knack of assing out those sorts of spells that we need from a second spinner

EDIT: Lottery1994. Who cares? He's our best quality spinner so he's got to be considered. Marnus wasn't considered good enough for odis but the side is better for someone of his quality.

I agree Green is a risk but he's been around long enough to think the umps will pass him.

i didn’t even know you could add someone after the tournament started. It’s still to be seen how well we go with our injury replacements. If they wanted another spinner would have picked Sanga. You say you wouldn’t pick these one day specialists I think Zampa and Agar are better than Lyon as short form bowlers still. You say we shouldn’t panic but picking Lyon now who’s rarely gotten a long run for Australia in the shorter formats before and doesn’t have much match fitness is pretty much panicking

I think you can replace injured guys so its all speculation if Stoin goes home (I think they should replace him as we're carrying Travis' injury too). I'd pick Tanveer if Zampa was injured but someone other than a leggie if Stoin has to be replaced. Picking Lyon isn't panicking. You go for your best and that would be Lyon Murphy or Green (imo).

Stoinis apparently will be fit and we know they won’t drop him they should have not picked Cam Green and picked another spinner. I don’t think they’re bowling was crazy bad like lot of people think after yesterday game. If they didn’t drop Kohli then it would have been a different game plus Aus batters had a good chance to get a par score of like 250-270 yesterday but got bowled under 200 so the Indian batters could go at whatever rate they wanted there was no scoreboard pressure. There’s not many bowling sides that would of defended that total yesterday

Smith has 62 ball hundreds. He plays the situation just like today when it was it was genuinely difficult to score
Marnus obviously hasn't set the world on fire but he was also improving of late in South Africa. Those two aren't the issue
He may have made runs in SA but of the to top run scorers in the series his strikerate was way below the others.

He averaged 70 in that series while leading the runs chart and striking at 96. If you think there's an issue with that you need to get your head checked out. Marnus and smith aren't the issue. Marnus had ~10 runs knocked off his total from brilliant fielding from india and smith copped a jaffa from jadeja. The issue is that green and carey are underperforming and where shuffling maxwell around and massively upping his workload just after an injury to try and fix that.

It will be interesting if Stoinis is fit as he was seen as some sort of a spin-hitter by his franchise in the IPL and the Aussie team mgmt perhaps think the same. In that case, it would make sense to bat him 5 and Maxwell at 7, which might be best for both and not play Green. You really dont need a 4th seamer/new ball bowler.

Think Stoinis will definitely be in once his fit. His a more useful bowling option as well for the quicks and compared to Marsh and Green who seem to be reluctant to bowl like 5 overs a game. 7 for Maxwell does seem like a more ideal spot I don’t buy his role of pushing him up the order to build an innings and then fire his the type of player who just goes beserk after like 5 balls. I’d put Stoinis at 5 as well and move up Maxwell to 4 or 5 only if the innings and run rate is going well.

If you’re getting your odd 30 plus scores from Maxwell and Stoinis at a high run rate and your 5 plus overs each game then I think that’s more than ideal for the team.
