Averaged 47-48 for preceding 4 years. Not mediocre. Plus it's a very dicey way to pick out a player's best years and analyse his performances. Ashwin is thoroughly mediocre in Eng and Australia, poor in SA. Virat for all his struggles in Eng, managed to have a fantastic series there against his primary nemesis.

4 hundreds is a lot tho. Was facing the same Johnson who'd destroyed Eng a year back. Also Lyon in decent form. Was pretty decent in his other tours as well. his hundred at Perth is the best knock by an Indian in Australia

Kohli's peak began in the 2013/4 series in SA and scored everywhere after that except England in 2014.

Ok. Let me rephrase. Kohli has an ATG record in Aus and SA, and ATG performances in Eng. Plus a great record at home. Ashwin just has an ATG record in SC and WI.
