This one was a great JAMODI, Ashraful's finest moment. Probably one of the biggest upsets ever because that Australia side was at full strength too.

Bit of a nitpick but technically they weren't, what that game is most known for in Australia at least was Andrew Symonds being pulled out of the side in the warmups because he was still drunk. There's a great story about him trying to stretch on a bin and falling over

For some reason I started thinking about this opening game from the 2003 World Cup, mainly because of the insane acceleration by the Windies after 30 overs (and especially the last 5).

But I'd forgotten the rule about slow over rates and how SA were docked an over from their chase (which proved decisive). What I couldn't remember though, what happened if the team bowling second bowled too slowly? Was there any punishment for them?

Interesting question. Would have been tough to do to a team that is successfully holding off a chase, to dock them runs or something, and lose the game that way.

I know, but surely you couldn't have a rule that could only penalise the team bowling first? I just can't remember how it worked, although I think that might basically have been it.

I've enjoyed this thread. Yeah, we've had disagreements over what was included (always going to happen) and the somewhat favouring of Indian involvement, but it's also sparked up some great memories of other matches eg Viv, Robin Smith and even that Lancs/Surrey scorecard!

It should hardly be surprising that Crapinfo couldn't actually manage to complete the list before the actual comp started.

A year later in Melbourne the reverse happened in the much anticipated Super Challenge 2000 when Australia were decisively docked 2 overs and lost as a result. Which makes it all even out in the end. If anything the Super Challenge was higher profile, especially being in the city known as the home of sport

Be that as it may, the team performances were so equal that they could not even be split at the level of wickets lost (once upon a time this used to be a deciding parameter) and differed in terms of balls faced by just two. They were tied on boundary count, down to the break-up of fours and sixes! Whatever hold the Australians may have had over South Africa was subtle and marginal.
