The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

West Indies quite often had a specialist #7 bat when Sobers was playing: e.g. Joe Solomon when they played in India/Pakistan in 1958-9, and a couple of times in the 1960-1 tour of Australia (plus in one match he batted at 8), and the return tour in 1964-5; Lloyd, Kanhai, Butcher and Nurse all batted at 7 in the 1968-9 tour.

Something different.
I've got my own ideas of an All Time best XI, but at this level of champion player there is not a lot of difference on paper, but might be against certain opposition on certain decks around the world.
I'll pick what i believe ( within maybe 5 yrs leeway for selection) the 2 best teams the last 50 years for a fictitious test match on a wicket that might suit them.
Pick a "horses for courses" ATG team from all era's you think would be the best combination to play against:

v West Indies, Perth

Desmond Haynes
Gordon Greenidge
Viv Richards
Alvin Kallicharan
Clive Lloyd (c)
Lawrence Rowe
Jeff Dujon
Malcolm Marshall
Joel Garner
Andy Roberts
Michael Holding

v Australia, Johannesburg

Matthew Hayden
Justin Langer
Ricky Ponting (c)
Steve Waugh
Michael Clarke
Michael Hussey
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Brett Lee
Jason Gillespie
Glenn McGrath

E.G,
v WI in Perth i might try an opening pair that has a chance to knock the Windies off their line and length. You know they will be lethal and its a slick bouncy wicket so needs to be some sort of plan. I'm going in with an opening combo of tall LHB and short RHB. Gavaskar and Hayden to open. See if they can maintain a decent line and length against those two rotating the strike regularly. Obviously doesnt mean i think they are the two best all time....just for that match.

I will stick to the 1975-1985 range you have chosen your Windies team from and build a team to take them on in Perth

West Indies XI

Desmond Haynes
Gordon Greenidge
Viv Richards
Alvin Kallicharan
Clive Lloyd (c)
Lawrence Rowe
Jeff Dujon
Malcolm Marshall
Joel Garner
Andy Roberts
Michael Holding

ROW XI

Sunil Gavaskar
Graham Gooch
Greg Chappell *
GR Viswanath
Allan Border
Imran Khan
Kapil Dev
Richard Hadlee
Rod Marsh +
Dennis Lillee
Jeff Thompson

Nice team that one. Luvvin Vishy in there coz need some guts and he had plenty. Like the Thomson addition also coz may need to remind them if they head hunt on that deck, they will cop it back. Lots of bowling options. Even Gooch and Chappell who could roll their arm over with some medium pace.

So, some have often tried to have two teams of equal strength to go against each other, and going by affiliations of regional location hasn't quite achieved that.

So don't believe this deserves a thread, but what about a two person alternate / snake draft where we start out with two selectors (myself and .... any takers?), two captains, Bradman and Imran and go from there.
Pews, TJB, Peterhrt, Subz, Silver, Trundler, Red (though he will introduce Miller into the mix, lol), Sean, Smali?

Might be a stupid idea, might be fun. But could capture a frame of reference when having these ATG arguments

Are you not aware that there is a seperate subforum for drafts in CW CC?

It's to spark conversation and provide a reference point as to when discussing merits of players and frame how x would do vs y while. Playing with z in an less abstract way

Bradman makes the whole exercise futile imo because the other 10 blokes in both teams will be closely matched. Either both teams should get Bradman or none.
This is the part I don't get.

PEWS, yourself, Smali, Subz etc have Imran as the 2nd best ever, some even as the best cricketer ever, period. Him and Sobers on the same team doesn't blunt Bradman's impact or dominance at all?
According to most on the forum those three separate themselves quite a bit from the rest of the players in history.

I'm up for this as long as you getting Bradman counts as your first pick.

So the draft order would be

Kyear - Bradman
PEWS - Imran
PEWS -
Kyear -
Kyear -
PEWS

Etc.
