We can't let flukes mislead us as to who was better.
148 and 81 in Johannesburg against peak Donald and Pollock

180 in Eden Gardens against peak McWarne

148 in Headingley against Flintoff, Hoggard and Caddick

233 and 72 in Adelaide against Gillespie and Machill

270 in Pindi against peak Akhtar

The entire 2011 series

Lot of “flukes”

Show me AB’s comparable innings

Most teams have a good attack for English and South African conditions. Same can't be said for Australian and Indian.

Eden Gardens ok. Headingley and Adelaide come on, those were poor attacks and on roads. Pindi Akthar broke down. 2011 yup that counts.

ABD double tons against Kumble and Ajmal, tons against peak Mitch in 2009 and 2014, great series against Cummins and co in 2018 too.

Why does Dravid average 38 against Australia and 33 against SA?

Dravid had a strike rate of 39.9 against pace in a career where attacks were shallower by and large than Kohli's time and pitches were flatter. Same approach today and it easily sinks to the mid-30s. Younis and Cook (both also atrritional against quality pace) would go a similar way. But out of those three, Dravid is the best bet to expand his game against pace. Younis could score quickly against spin.

I would hardly consider Headingley a road. It was seen as a very difficult seaming wicket playing bowlers very good on those wickets

The averages matter less to me than the high points

And there are other good attacks beyond Aus and SA. England was consistently excellent through the 2000s

If the overall returns against quality attacks are poor, high points don't matter.

You would expect every class player to be exceptional at cashing in. Some get to do it more than others. Some are obviously particularly good at it.
Runs in tough conditions and runs against good attacks are the defining differences generally. I would say the Jamaica 06 knocks were a better example of Rahul Dravid's quality than some of the hundreds listed there because Jamaica was at least an example of runs on a brutal wicket. Some of the examples listed there aren't particularly good attacks or particularly tough conditions.

You can also expect every class cricketer to have a top knock here or there against quality attacks, but not to do so consistently across a career.

So show me AB’s iconic knocks against the best bowlers
ABD away double tons against Kumble and Ajmal, tons against peak Mitch in 2009 and 2014, great series against Cummins and co in 2018 too.

Also a fourth innings winning ton in Perth 2008, though that was a road.

Anyways this thread is about general skill not just best innings.

That’s your interpretation and besides general skill is manifested in overall average (I don’t believe choosing two opponents means much and you can’t credibly say that AB played against better bowling) and iconic innings are ultimately how careers are rememberdd

He has another century on the next tour too against Ajmal

Fading Ajmal and a legendarily bad bowling line up where he was overshadowed by that great player of spin Graeme Smith

I agree AB looks a million dollars but what has he actually done????
