Best old time players in a modern setting

Which Pre WWII debuting player ( other than Don Bradman ), would you expect to do the best, in a typical modern setting? Why?

My vote goes to Len Hutton. I think he did well enough, even in his late career against the best pace attacks of Australia that there were at the time, even if they weren't quite modern, but imho they were more than good enough to judge his quality against.

Both Hutton and Sutcliffe would be at least Alastair Cook-level openers.

Hammond would probably become a T20 mercenary so he could shag his way around the world.

Sydney Barnes would ABSOLUTELY have been a T20 mercenary, and probably the greatest of them all.

Gilbert Jessop and Bill O’Reilly would be absolute short form menaces.

Hobbs would dominate on these piss easy wickets.

Trumper and Hill would love to bat in short forms too.

Also WG would be pulling reverse Mankads in the T20 leagues “they paid to see me play”.


And also Trumper would make millions if he took one publicity shot in the same pose as that famous old phot.

Possibly, but he’d also score tons more often.

All of them would do well I assume. They played in really tough conditions, bowling and fielding standards were also elite at the time.

Can't really say. But what I do know is that standards have improved across all sports ... except cricket in the 1980s, which we know defied the trend and is superior to the present day.

Vijay Merchant, he had a FC avg of 71 , unfortunately he could only play 10 tests because of World War 2 ..I feel he is an underrated legend, his planning on how to deal with the wet pitches in England was ahead of his time for Asian players , in India he would instruct the net bowlers to bowl from 15 yards and would sprinkle water on the practice pitches to replicate sticky dogs he would get in England, he scored over 2,000 FC runs @74 on the tour to England in 1946
