20 Greatest ODIs (by ESPNCricinfo)

I feel like they're reading this thread. "Quick lads, find another random ODI that no one's thought of where an Indian did well".

I've had a quick skim through this thread, I don't think Kapil has had a single mention in it.

Having read the report though, it does feel like it has more place here (far more so than Kohli's innings) and was key to World Cup victory.

There's no way the Kapil one is as meaningful as the Kohli one. Why don't we put other minnow-bashing WC performances in here like McGrath 7-15 v Namibia, or Bichel 7-20 v England

Yeah, no issue with this one - it was a famous innings to rescue India from a losing position in a World Cup that they went on to win. The 1983 Final will no doubt on the list as well.

The countdown so far does actually raise a serious (sorry) question though of where they go from here. I've made my peace with the fact that it's not a countdown of literally the 20 best games of ODI cricket ever (we're closing in on 5,000 of those, how do you even come up with such a ranking?) and rather is a subjective collection of the most memorable/iconic/significant matches/moments/performances, which is absolutely fine.

But if you take that even from an Indian point of view as has been this discussion, then if that Kohli innings above is one of the top 20 then as already noted the Natwest Trophy final should be too. And way above that of course is Sachin's 200* and even above that is the 1983 final win. I'd say that Kapil's 175 deserves a mention but it may well be included under the "83" banner. And do we also include the 2011 final, as the culmination of the Tendulkar era? And that's without including Desert Storm and probably a plethora of other matches I've forgotten that others here would champion.

So that's at least another four or five entries on the list, maybe more, without considering the most notable entries from other countries, and notwithstanding the absolute all time locks (1999 semi, 438/434, 2019 final, even the very first ever ODI for sheer significance?) which have to be included anyway. We're going to run out of road very quickly!
Was indeed foreshadowed.

ISWYDT!!

Having said that, if we're going to include other key ODI's that saved a World Cup campaign and helped lead to eventual victory, maybe they'll have this one too....

We're eight matches in now and Pakistan are the only one of the top 8 nations not to get a mention...

Probably have one of their World Cup defeats to India as their first inclusion - Tendulkar's assault in 2003 being the obvious one.

I strongly disagreed with the premise earlier in the thread that the 2019 final was not a great game until the finish but wanted to re-validate my thinking. I'd watched the super over a million times, many not even deliberately, and all the late Stokes stuff is obviously imprinted but I dug out the extended highlights on Sky Sports and it was like reliving it all over again. From the first to the last neither side could really get on top for long periods. Yes it was a poor batting deck but 240 plays 240 has always (IMO) made for good one day cricket and this game had real ebb and flow.

Maybe the last 10 overs plus super overs are what takes it to #1 but I think the idea that it was all about the finish is completely wrong.

Incidentally I just read the chapter about it in Geoff Lemon's The Comeback Summer this morning and he certainly agrees. So take that, losers!

My argument was that the 2019 final was a slow burner and the 1st innings wasn't particularly exciting or high quality, especially when we are comparing it with the 99 semi when Pollock took a wicket in the 1st over and you had legends like Waugh, Bevan, Donald and Pollock all with standout performances as the match swayed back and forth.
