Bedser and Compton are definitely overrated. Trueman is a bit overrated but he did still average 26 away which is underwhelming for an ATG but a good return. Some NZ bullying but he didn't play India/Pakistan like Wes Hall did at the time (both pretty hopeless against pace back then except Hanif). Hazare was slightly before.

I'm often critical of the English cricket media's influence because it is far too subjective for the power they have and it was an even bigger problem before 1970 for a few reasons.
Denis Compton is quite a unique case; his subjective rating comes from two things specifically. He was fun to watch. And the whole thing about his fun batting cheering people up after the war. Those things elevate his status a little bit probably fairly in a specifically England legends only list. But in all honestly it shouldn't really impact his case against an overseas cricketer. Losing six years to the War was notably rough though; and that obviously also applies to guys like Dudley Nourse and Stanley McCabe.
