Oh we lost to UAE, how cool. that's a great confidence builder.
Just looking at the scorecard now and see Santner batting at 3. At least we know we weren't taking it too seriously.

Loss like this was always bound to happen. NZ are playing a second XI and jamming a bunch of borderline no-rounders/half cooked youngsters in against a solid outfit. Waseem and asif khan are both class with the bat in this format. Surpised not to see that young leggie who took a hattrick vs SL last t20 wc missing out here, what's the go with him?

I mean honestly, this bowling attack is a bit poor from NZ. Jamieson's just come back from an injury and has never been great in t20I/at higher franchise level, lister's stats don't even seem good enough to demand a consistent spot in a domestic NZ white ball team. Southee and santner are good but outside of that they've got 3/4 allrounders in their that aren't good enough. You can't only pick 4 frontline bowlers and rely on 6th options to make up the rest when 2 of your frontline four bowlers are terrible.

Neeshaw is an issue aswell. Fine cricketer, but he's not good enough to bat higher than 7 and can't be relied on for more than 2 overs on a game to game basis. Having him means you need to try and jam in another allrounder or two to make up the numbers. Rachin's use is just mindboggling here. What's the point of playing him here as a specialist #7 bat. FFS Santner's never gonna bat 3-5 in a full strength team, what's the point in shoehorning him in so high up and forcing rachin down.
Picking an opening batsman with a lowish domestic strike rate to bat 8 and not bowl was a great call.

Did SteveNZ remember this game
 Nope, I didn't. Just learned of it when I logged on here.

OK, so I haven't watched the 'highlights' but here goes for an analysis.

Santner batting at 3, when he's going to be doing a finisher's job at the World Cup in just over a month. Nice one.
Ravindra batting 8, a role he isn't good at, ahead of two better hitters. Then not bowling. Wonderful.
Playing Dane Cleaver, who averages 23 in T20s, when there's already a keeper in the team. Outstanding.
Why isn't Foxcroft playing?

Insanity. We deserved to lose, and to get smashed like we did.

Lighten up, folks. It's Dubai, home of "win the toss, win the game", even if the effect isn't as pronounced this time of year.

142 was never enough, & there are issues with the batting, but it was the bowling & fielding where this really fell down; take those three dropped catches & they're six down minimum, keep the pressure on & a win while defending is possible, like in the 1st T20. I still remember the 2021 T20WC game vs Scotland we almost lost, & we were defending 172.

Southee needs to call it right tonight.

Foxcroft and Ashok (and Duffy) aren't going to England afaik so if they don't play the final match honestly what the hell are we doing
Apparently, all the UAE-only squad members are going to England anyway for the warm-ups vs Worcestershire & Gloucestershire.

With that said, I think Foxcroft, Ashok & Duffy would probably be better off going to Australia. The NZ A tour begins on 28 August, but no squad has been named. I think those three can be spared - Phillips, Henry, Ferguson & probably Sodhi will be freed as their teams in The Hundred will likely drop out.
