Steven Finn Retires

Can anyone run me through what happened with finn as a player? His bowling numbers are actually pretty good, tacking regular wickets @30 across a wide range of conditions in that 2010-2016 batting paradise era is really good. 2016 is when pace bowling got a ton easier across the globe for a ton of reasons and broad and anderson really hit their absolute best, is their any reason finn didn't have a similiar trajectory? He's as tall if not taller than them, a bit quicker at his peak from what I can tell and also younger.

Took wickets with trash, record flattered him a bit, got the yips after they changed the rules about knocking the bails off at the non striker's end, then had injury troubles.

Decent commentor for a former fast bowler though.

chronically mis-managed by the ECB as well.

action went to pot after the change in rules re the bails. lost all momentum as he approached the crease. at his best he was very quick. england have quite a few genuine 'what could have been' fast bowlers in that era.

finn
tremlett if he hadn't been made of glass
bresnan if his elbow hadn't gone

When did they change the rules about the bails? The only time I ever saw him bowl in the flesh must've been at least ten years ago and even then I was surprised at how quick he wasn't.

About as news worthy as Hasaranga retiring from Tests
A bit harsh. Finn did at least have a half decent career to talk about, Hasaranga's efforts in Tests should be kept as quiet as possible.

Pretty much as soon as Graeme Smith asked them to.

I always thought Bresnan never had the basic athleticism to bowl quickly on a regular basis. He was quite sharp from late 2010 to the end of the 2011 India series. He lost pace after his elbow injury and he was never that quick when he first bowled for England v Sri Lanka in 2006 when he got flogged.

Norwood's on Fire
Certainly had his moments, especially during the 2015 Ashes (which was post his general Smith-induced decline) but yeah never quite achieved what you thought he might.

As has been alluded to, excellent on TMS

Ngl I thought he’d retired years ago
This.

Do we really need a thread on every single player retirement?

Like a thread purely to discuss a player like Broad is fine obviously, but I swear I just keep seeing a shitload of retirement threads lately, half about cricketers I don’t even know/care about.

Seems weird especially since we have a “retirement thread”.

like you said definitely bowled a fair bit quicker through 2010-11, especially in that Ashes win. He combined that with fairly prodigious movement and was more than a handful.

he was an absolute spud when he debuted.

What? Why does it matter? If you don't care about the player, don't open the thread. But this is a good opportunity to see him off and talk about his career, which wasn't insignificant if you excuse the double negative.

He was a mainstay of my formative years watching the sport, so pretty significant to me. Massively up and down player, but was seriously tough to play at his best with the stiff bounce. Had a good stretch where he was our best ODI quick too, though in a poor era.

Already a decent commentator so could hear plenty more from him in the next few years.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
He was great during the Ashes when he was giving some insight about bowling in the pre-days play hype up. Thought he had retired so was surprised to see was still playing domestically.

Hope he becomes an overseas match commentator, reckon he's really good in this area.

That whole episode with the bails was a disgrace.

Good career at the top of our game. Hope he continues in his media roles.
