Australian Domestic off-season 2023

No Marnus in the 18 is a bit surprising but it's a good call IMO. I'd cut Hardie, Abbott and Sangha from that.
Yup no Marnus.

He simply doesn't belong in that destructive lineup. There is only room for one such player (Smith) and even he can play somewhat aggressively when needed. So yeah right move for sure.

Aus A squads to play NZ announced

Australia A four-day squad: Wes Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Jordan Buckingham, Ben Dwarshuis, Caleb Jewell, Campbell Kellaway, Matthew Kelly, Matthew Kuhnemann, Nathan McAndrew, Nathan McSweeney, Joel Paris, Jimmy Peirson, Mitch Perry, Josh Philippe, Mark Steketee, Mitchell Swepson, Tim Ward

Australia A one-day squad: Wes Agar, Ollie Davies, Ben Dwarshuis, Liam Hatcher, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Ben McDermott, Todd Murphy, Josh Philippe, Matthew Renshaw, Gurinder Sandhu, Matt Short, Mark Steketee, Will Sutherland, Ashton Turner

So weird seeing Murphy and Kuhnemann in an A squad while Sangha is in the SA and WC squads

I actually didn't mind both Marnus and Smith playing in theory. Lots of other dashers in the lineup especially with Head replacing Finch. The problem wasn't really that he wasn't destructive enough, it's that he didn't actually make any runs. He averaged only 25 in his last 20 games.

Dwarshuis, a 29 year old seamer who struggles to get selected for the team that finished last and took 4 wickets @ 37 this season, getting a gig in the four day squad is a big call.

Dwarshuis selection is just bizarre as he’s not in the top 20 bowlers in the country in any format

Must be a massive amount of unavailability for him to get a gig

I like seeing Caleb Jewell and Wardy in the four day squad. Really like the cut of Jewell’s jib, he had a sort of half break out year last season with some good knocks and I’d love to see him kick on. Both of them should be well in the frame for higher honours if they have a good tour here and a decent start to the FC season.

Wardy also in the MRF academy squad to tour India

Can't see a lot of rhyme or reason in that squad. Definitely not a proper A team, nor a youth squad. Maybe whoever was given the job of selecting it just rang whatever numbers he had on hand and the first 17 or so that said yes were in

Pretty blah squad. Not sure what the point if dragging Johnson to SA is when our stupidly conservative selection means he will play zero or one matches. The only pace bowler in the four day squad that may have an test future is Buckingham.

Philippe also bleh with his poor recent Shield record. Overall the batting looks very thin.

Also once again some other team's A side is touring here. I feel like if you totted up Aus A's home versus away fixtures it would come to about three to one.

Johnson is rapidly becoming one of the world’s best white ball bowlers and will be one of the first chosen unless the selectors completely ignore form

You guys must have been watching different cricket to me because I haven't been impressed with Spencer Johnson at all (sorry GAS). I don't think I've seen him move a ball a centimetre in the air, he's the most straight up-and-down bowler I've seen. Seems to me most of his "success" is built on banging it in short of a length angling across with the left-arm angle and below-average batsmen struggling to hit it. He'll get crucified against quality batting IMO

He moves it more than Morris

Maybe it's because I've only seen Johnson with a white ball and seen Morris with a red ball but that's not been my experience

I should probably hold judgement on Johnson in this regard until I've seen him with a red ball that might actually swing

Bartlett not allowed to bowl until late September due to hotspots

Dwarshuis probably last man standing
