How many tests is sufficient to judge a cricketer in a country?

I'd say 2 tours is what counts be it 2, 3, or more games each tour. Hard to see many players getting more than 2 tours to each country unless you are from the big 3 who play each other so often as test cricket seems to be dying on its arse.

So what do we make of Ambrose in Pakistan? Two tours, one good, one absolute flop, overall 15 wickets @25 in 5 tests?

It can still be a fluke though. Sehwag got a century in his first innings in SA then never did anything again because he wasn't suited to those conditions technically.
Ya, it's not bulletproof and oddities happen. A couple of success in a limited number of outings will likely mean a solid handle on conditions though.

With more tests IN Pakistan, he'd probably be around the 25-28 average wise and a sr under 70 with around 3 to 3.5 wpm. Not great by any stretch of the imagination but not a complete failure either. And I'm basing this on his overall record vs Pakistan. Yes, I know some of those tests were in the WI but a few were played at Bourda and the ARG the flattest wkts in the world.
