Any examples of cricketers who were absolutely amazing against a particular Test side but had modest records for the majority of their Test career against everyone else ?

While his records against other countries are also decent, VVS somehow became an ATG player while playing against Australia while being merely a very good player against other sides.

The same thinking but for Shoaib against NZ

It's crazy how inept he made their batsmen look around 02-03.

Mitchell Marsh v England.

Richie Richardson averaged more against India and NZ than he did against Australia but 9 of his 16 test centuries came against the Aussies.

Wasim Raja's averages against the West Indies (late 70s/early 80s) were 57.43 batting, 28.25 bowling (admittedly only taking 8 wickets); overall they were 36.16/35.80.

Mitch Marsh has been mentioned but it's actually the Marsh brothers vs England

Against England Shaun averaged 55.87 and Mitch averages 50.23. Against all other countries Shaun averaged 31.34 and Mitch 20.76

Kamran Akmal averaged 43 against India. Averaged 27 against everyone else from 42 tests. He also hit 4 of his 6 Test hundreds against them.

Chris Woakes averages 42 with the bat and 18 with the ball against Pakistan (8 tests). 25 and 33 respectively against everyone else, in 40 Tests.

For a more literal one-team wonder, George Headley hit 1852 of his 2190 Test runs against England, against whom he averaged 71 and his 8 tons against us were his 8 highest scores. He played one series against the Australians in 1930-31 and averaged 37 despite two tons, and one test against India right at the end of his career. Never got to play NZ or a pre-war India, and obviously couldn't play SA because the past is awful.

A quite popular one in the 2000's was Andre Nel vs The West Indies ..52 wickets in 10 Test Matches against them @22 , all of his 5-fors and 1 10 for came against them , and they had a decent batting line up in this period too ..I think Brian Lara was his bunny , 8 times dismissed in 7 Tests .

Terry Alderman. Averaged 21 with 11 5’fers in 17 tests against England (100 wickets). Averaged 35.70 with 3 5’fers in 21 tests vs everyone else (70 wickets).

Similarly Rodney Hogg, 56 wickets @ 17 with 5 5’fers in 11 tests vs England. 67 wickets at 38.70 with 1 5’fer in 27 tests vs everyone else.
