I think the criticism comes from Marnus being so extreme about it, not merely that he scored slowly. The risk of that going wrong is that if a wicket falls it could easily lead to a collapse without many runs to insulate it from happening.
That would be POTUS tbf wouldn't it.

It's definitely not as bad as if he'd just gotten out immediately, especially if pitch/weather conditions change for the better.
But the real issue was that there were several legit bad balls that he just let go. Regardless of conditions you can't just refuse to score like that unless you're in a batting for a draw in the second innings situation.

Slow scoring can be good, but not scoring ~at all on Day 2 of a Test is pretty bad.

Genuinely though, while I don't think Marnus' innings was optimal, there's definitely part of me that's still annoyed that no one for England thought to slow down and grind the Oz bowling even a little bit a Lords when your spinner was injured.

Both Duminy’s innings were in the same test at Colombo - SA batted very slowly and SL very aggressively.

I think had that happened last year I reckon you guys would've. It honestly has felt like Bazball's lost a lot of its subtlety in the last 6 months. While there are times where it has worked this series (Manchester), there's a lot of times where if they went even slightly more conventional England would've pressed home advantages harder.

There's a difference between what Khawaja is doing, scoring slowly but taking some chances, to build a platform for further run scoring in better conditions, and what Marnus did in just scoring slow for the sake of it.
Come on, 9 (82) is ****ing dire for a specialist batsman. You're not trying to "save a draw" in the first innings of a Test match against a reasonable (but not remotely overwhelming) opposition total.
