Asterisked cricketing victories

There's a lot of obvious chat about whether the Manchester weather diminishes Australia retaining the Ashes this year. It being affected Ashes we've also had people referring back to McGrath's freak injury in 2005. Some people like to put a proverbial asterisk against such series, as if the result doesn't quite count to the same extent as those of other series.

For me personally, weather and injuries are inescapable elements of cricket so wrong to make a fuss over them if they influence a result. However, it did get me thinking about what other series had been adversely impacted in ways that they probably shouldn't have.

The one that stuck in my mind was England's tour to Pakistan in 2005, often heralded as the beginning of the end of Fletcher's era. Yet we started that tour really well, amassing a sizeable first innings lead in Multan before collapsing chatting a modest target. That match was also Shabbir Ahmed's last international because he was quickly reported for a suspect action afterwards, but too late to negate his important contribution of 5/79 in the test. Pakistan then went on to thump up is in the third test and win the series 2-0. It's not easy to postulate a what-if but it's not unimaginable that England would've won that match had he not played and then, who knows?

What are other's examples of matches or series that were inadvertently affected in a way that shouldn't have happened? [Yes, we all know about WCF 2019]

Injuries (and other sport dependant factors) are an inescapable part of sport. It doesn’t diminish what other teams/athletes achieved for me at all.

Personally as a Warriors fan in the NBA for example I could say oh 2016 wouldn’t have happened without Draymond suspension and 2019 wouldn’t have happened without Klay/KD injuries but it doesn’t diminish the amazing accomplishments of LeBron/Kyrie and Kawhi in those post seasons. They all just become a part of the great what if scenarios.

Obviously it will be talked about a lot at the time, but we don’t really go back and say oh 2005 doesn’t count because McGrath’s injury. We all remember it as a great series which England won. There shouldn’t be any asterisks attached.

Think it was more recently than that, but I actually read it earlier today when looking for something else
I was looking at the wrong post in the search results.

I think I see a French comic book character mentioned more than half the time.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but the 2019 World Cup Final.
On a similar vein the first WTC championship. The league round was hugely impacted by the pandemic and the points system was suboptimal. Then the final was played between a team who'd already had two tests to acclimatise to English conditions against an opponent who were pretty much straights off the plane.

The most infamous example in recent times might be the Cronje test at the end of England's SA tour in 99/00. Yet that match still stands in official records while, thanks to gatekeeping by the scorer community, a number of RotW type matches were never officially granted international status or had it removed post hoc.
