Technically England hold the Ashes.

They are in an urn on display at Lords. England has generously allowed the urn to visit Australia on 3 occasions - firstly in 1988 as part of the Bicentenary Test celebrations and most recently in 2019 as part of the "Velvet, Iron, Ashes" exhibition at the Statev Library Victoria.

The funny thing is, I now have more hope for the next series down under then any in the previous decade. The Aussies know they've got away with this series somehow but serious issues have been exposed. The replacement for Warner doesn't exist (and Khawaja is 37), nor the one for Lyon. England have at least blooded some younger seamers, do the Aussies even have any under 30? Neser the next cab at 33....the Boland experiment is finished. Smith looks a shadow of the player he was whilst Head needs to learn to play the short ball or else his Test career won't last much longer.

So yes of course England will hold the Ashes again, and it could come sooner than you think.

Yeah, I feel like we'll actually be getting rid of players who frankly have never really been suited to Australia anyway. Robinson did pretty well last time, I suspect Tongue could go well too. Most of the batting is pretty young whilst Root and Stokes (who I think will become a specialist bat) will only be 34. We also have some decent keeper batsmen coming through too (Smith, Robinson, Rew).

But at the moment I don't quite see how Australia replace 2 quicks, 2 openers, a spinner and possibly Steve Smith. I think the last 2 Tests have also shown just how important Lyon is to this Aussie team.

I went to the Acropolis Museum today and it struck me England supporters are carrying on like the Greeks with the Elgin Marbles. Except we’re kind enough to put the Ashes up for the taking every two years whereas you simply stole the history of another country, at luck it in a dull edifice in Russell Square and won’t even give it back.

Nothing wrong with the brand of cricket played by England, it has powered them to become world champions in limited overs cricket.

Just that hammering Aussie bowlers won't be this easy on harder wickets as compared to soft pitches in England. Especially with Scott Boland activating his metronomic terminator mode on seamy roads.

We'll replace the quicks, Smith is staying and we have Murphy and Kuhnemann as spin options. We'll be going through our opener options pretty soon too.

I assume with less rain in the forecast that Australia will pick a team for the Oval not designed to grab a draw. Will be interesting to see how Murphy is utilised and how brave Cummins is when the English batsmen inevitably come at him.

Smith has scored two test tons this summer and batted in unfavourable conditions. The decline of Smith is only comparable to his almost Bradman like levels he maintained over many seasons. If he's now a 45 - 50 batsman then that is still like gold for us. As long as we wants to play he gets picked. I've just seen on another thread there are rumours about him quitting after the Oval. Personally I can't see him bowing out in England and this way. The same report says the rumours are unfounded which is hopefully the case.

Murphy could get tonked but I wouldn't lose hope. Lyon says he wants to keep playing even at 40 so I think there's enough time to polish Murphy into a test performer. I think we have the pace bowlers coming through still and hope Jhye Richardson can finally get fit. The batting is the problem but there is hope for the middle order with Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie. Its the openers that are the problem. I'm afraid we'll have to go through the process of selecting Harris, Renshaw and Bancroft and maybe Whiteman until something better comes along. I've given up on Pucovski.

Yeah, I'm sure Smith bats on as long as he wants to, and you're right, if he's a 45 bat then that's hardly a bad thing in the modern day. Question might be whether he can cope himself with being that standard.

I think Head could become an issue, it's now universal knowledge he's uncomfortable against short stuff and will need to sort that out.

Who are the potential seamers? Every player who seems to get a mention (Abbott the latest) is the wrong side of 30.
