Some parallels between this and the real Ashes. Hopefully we bowl Australia out cheaply tomorrow morning

Second Test, Lord's

Day Two

Resuming five down and with a minor advantage, Australia began to take control of the game on the second day thanks to the efforts of Tom Delonge. Batting with allrounders Starfighter and MacCoinnich before they both lost stumps to Davis and Smyth-Brown respectively, Delonge went right through the session and raised the second century of the innings. As the score crossed 400, Ruid added to his lower order exploits from the first game by supporting Delonge as the batsman began to attack, and 437/7 was the lunchtime score.

As the England bowlers wilted and Delonge brought up his 150, Thrust got rid of Ruid but the tail refused to be broken through entirely. By the time Vicente finally dismissed Delonge for a huge 173 the score had balooned past 500, and a final run out was not going to take the shine off an innings that lasted just shy of five sessions.

The England openers made it to the tea break unscathed, but soon after Arquis lost his off stump to O'Fcoco having scored 17 of an opening stand of 24. The defensive approach didn't pay off for Vicente either, as he was dismissed by Starfighter to leave England in serious trouble on 49/2. Howe and Worcester-Park steadied the ship with a fifty stand to taske the score into three figures, but Australia finished a dominant day by claiming the wicket of Worcester-Park in the final over.

Day Three

The third morning began poorly for the hosts as Jake Howe was bowled byRuid shortly after the resumption. Herregonaes and Mole were staring down the barrel with England still over 200 runs behind the follow on target, but responded superbly, counter-attacking in a stand where both partners reached their fifties before lunch, at 205/4.

After the break Mole departed to a sharp caught and bowled by O'Fcoco, and though Herregonaes was putting together a fine knock, Auistralia kept chipping away to stop the fightback. Inksquid was O'Fcoco's fourth wicket after a breezy 31, before late in the session Herregaonaes was pinned in front by David four short of his hundred.

Tea came with the score on 310/7 and though Roome and Smyth were able to get England past the follow-on target, Starfighter and David cleaned up the lower order before they could add too much to the total. Australia's lead was 160.

In the evening Davis struck early to give England a bit of hope, but Slim and Jevali saw out the day to reach the close on 51/1, a lead of 210 and ready to press home the advantage.

Day Four

England were unable to claim a much-needed early breakthrough on the fourth morning as Jevali and Slim boosted their partnership past the three-figure mark. Both players whethered an early storm and then pushed on either side of lunch, with Slim taking 12 off a Herregonaes over before misjudging a Vicente delivery to be dismissed for 91. Jevali reamained and raised a secure century while Delonge took over the attack, brining up a run-a-ball fifty to take the visitors' score towards 250.

With the second new ball Smythe-Brown dismissed Jevali and Thrust pinned Delonge in front shortly after, but the damage was done and tea came with the Australians over 400 in front. Kasinathan thwacked a few more before Davis picked up the consolation wicket shortly after tea, at which point Australia declared on exactly 300 to set the hosts 460 to win.

Thoughts of a daring chase were largely put to bed when Ruid sniffed out an edge from Vicente in his second over to break the opening stand. Arquis and Howe started the rebuid, but Howe was caught behind off an exploratory MacCoinnich over late in the day to maintain Australia's comfortable position and ask England to survive all day tomorrow with only 8 wickets remaining.

Looking to survive, Jason Arquis became the chief rearguard operator throughout the fifth day, but the Australian pace bowlers were able to chip away at the other end. Ruid picked up his second by sending one through Worcester-Park's defences for 37 and Starfighter did the same to Mole for an unsuccessful defensive stint of 7 off 26 shortly before lunch.

After the break both Herregonaes and Inksquid tried to take the counter-attacking approach while Arquis continued to accumulate, but both fell relatively cheaply to leave England teetering on 170/6. The opener eventually found a working partnership with Roome, and the allrounder assisted Arquis as he raised a gruelling hundred. But when murmurs of saving the game crept back, O'Fcoco struck twice to dimisss Roome and Smythe-Brown in the same over just before tea.

Arquis' vigil with tailenders Davis and Thrust came over the course of a 90-minute clampdown that threatened to take England right through the the final session, but it was a bridge too far. Arquis carried his bat for 130* while Australia's seam attack finished off the tail, Ruid finishing with 4-77, and the series was 1-1.

Whatever it takes!!!
Great effort from Arquis. Shame that some of the rest of us couldn't stick around for longer to support his efforts.

I won't say any more about the dubious nature of Kasinathan's catch for fear of exciting the match officials.
It's what happens when you play for Australia, mate. 🙂

So I fed ChatGPT the stats from the England team so far and asked it to propose an England XI.

  1. J. Arquis - With 231 runs in 4 innings, Arquis has been consistent with the bat and deserves a spot in the team.
  2. J. Howe - With 243 runs in 4 innings, Howe has been in good form and should open the batting alongside Arquis.
  3. D. Worcester-Park - With 227 runs in 4 innings, Worcester-Park has also been among the runs and should be included in the top order.
  4. S. Mole - Mole's all-round performance of 269 runs and 3 wickets makes him a valuable asset to the team. He should be included in the middle order.
  5. G. Herregonaes - With 121 runs and 6 wickets in 4 innings, Herregonaes has made contributions with both bat and ball, making him a good choice for the team.
  6. S. Vicente - Vicente's 41 runs and 3 wickets in 4 innings showcase his ability to contribute in both departments. He should be included as an all-rounder.
  7. R. Inksquid (wicket-keeper) - Inksquid's role as the wicket-keeper makes him a necessary inclusion in the team, considering his overall performance.
  8. R. Smythe-Brown - Smythe-Brown's impressive bowling figures of 10 wickets for 236 runs in 3 innings make him a strong candidate for the bowling lineup.
  9. H. Davis - Davis' 5 wickets for 251 runs in 3 innings indicate his bowling capabilities and he should be included in the team.
  10. C. Thrust - Thrust's 7 wickets for 247 runs in 3 innings make him a valuable addition to the bowling attack.
  11. Daemon - As the reserve player who hasn't been picked yet, Daemon's inclusion would depend on the specific requirements of the team. If you need an additional bowling option, Daemon could be considered.

I then told it that J. Arquis, Daemon and S. Vicente were all opening batsmen and asked if the team should be revised. To which it agreed and suggested this, which the eagle-eyed amongst you will notice is lacking in one key area.

  1. J. Howe
  2. D. Worcester-Park
  3. S. Mole
  4. G. Herregonaes
  5. R. Inksquid (wicket-keeper)
  6. R. Smythe-Brown
  7. H. Davis
  8. C. Thrust
  9. J. Arquis or S. Vicente
  10. Daemon (reserve player)
