Why are these guys operating under the assumption the players England have picked are capable of adapting and measuring themselves?

That’s the whole point of being a good test player and not a one dimensional thrasher. For all the carry on about aggression, the sides’ first innings run rates were near identical despite England batting in sunshine nearly the whole time. Because the side they’re playing against was able to get through the hard part then make hay, not smash it around in the sun then flounder like hapless water buffaloes in the overcast.

These guys are deluded. Their side plays the way it does because it’s the only way it can. Which is fine and it’s a good watch, but it’s as limited in its own way as a team which can only grind out 200 in a day, every day. Just in a different way.

My old man was there too.
I was 11 years old and just got back from the game. Went on the Hill with my grandparents. What a day and night. Crazy times.

And more innocent. My grandfather went into the club to have a few drinks with his mates and the players, while those of us under age waited outside and kicked a footy around for a few hours. Then the grandstand was set on fire.

The Sun, great arbiters of morality and decency that they are, have decided to try and gin up some outrage over that btw.

I was busy last night so I've only just seen that Steve Smith got Player of the Match. Is that some kind of practical joke? He must have been embarrassed to pick up the award

how dare they give the man of the match to the guy who scored a 100 when the conditions were toughest to bat after being put in to bat

Ehh. Smith's team won, his knock gave Australia a match winning first innings total and for most of that knock he was batting under cloudy skies with the ball moving a ton. Was a very good innings. Stokes was better, but the winning team more often than not get's MOTM.
