He played a bad shot but he's had a good last year in Tests, especially overseas. If we listened to you lot we'd never pick and promising young cricketers because we'd throw them in the trash the moment they don't instantly perform to their potential.
“Green seems a talented bloke, but don’t think he’s quite there yet. Think if you gave him another *check’s calendar* 5 years, 11 months and 5 days to develop he’d be a great option. Could see him being trialled in the limited overs side earlier, but he needs to work on his spin bowling first.” - Gary Stead

Cameron Green was on 22 Tests before the Lords Test , lets see how that shapes up to some of the Games best seamer allrounders when they were on 22 Tests :

Ian Botham : 1068 runs @ 36.98 ,118 wicket@19.27

Imran Khan : 760 runs @ 23.75 , 93 wickets @ 32.52

Tony Greig : 1558 runs @ 44.51 , 51 wickets @ 35.63

Jacques Kallis : 1019 runs @30.88,
31wickets @30.35

Keith Miller : 1052 runs @ 40.46 , 60 wickets@21.23

Ben Stokes : 1340 runs @ 34.46 , 52 wickets @ 39.38

Garry Sobers (May have bowled spin)
1971 runs @ 63.58 , 25 wickets @ 49.44

Cameron Green : 1038 runs @ 35.79 , 26 wickets @ 34.27

His batting isn't far away from the greats , underbowled though ..
Reid 1159 runs @ 31.32, 31 wickets @ 37.25

Hadlee 724 runs @ 20.11, 82 wickets @ 32.87

Kapil 891 runs @ 33.00, 81 wickets @ 29.01

Cairns 1070 runs @ 28.91, 60 wickets @ 36.76

Flintoff 683 runs @ 20.08, 33 wickets @ 50.57

Green played a really poor shot today but he's an outstanding prospect.

However, he's only 24 and he's already having to manage his bowling workload, which is a major concern.

He'll play in all formats for Aus and will be in demand from franchises around the world.

If he's not careful he'll end up being a batsmen who bowls a few overs here and there rather than the best all rounder Australia have had in a generation or more.
It's not unusual for younger fast bowlers to have had back issues and therefore have a managed bowling workload. Hopefully in the next couple of years it will sort itself out. Cummins was out for almost 6 years, so if there are potential injury issues, I guess the option is to break them or manage them through so they don't have to sit out for an extended period of time.

I remember when Steve Waugh struggled early in his test career and was dropped.

Is this guy the most over rated player currently? Here in Australia the media hype him up like his the next Botham. His got a lot of potential but he barely bowls 5 overs a match and hasn’t had many great innings so far
Like, I know I'm taking rancid bait by responding to this but if you can't see the potential Green has then lord help you

He does say he's got a lot of potential tbf.

I was really hoping the Ahmedebad innings would really settle him mentally and make him feel comfortable as a Test cricketer but it hasn't quite happened yet. He still seems to lack a bit of self-belief at the crease and not bowling much because of team management restrictions can't help.

He needs to learn to rotate the strike, get the odd one in the gap etc.
That's why I thought he looked decent at Edgbaston - he was scoring at a decent tempo, looking solid. The shot he played last night was ghastly but I do hope they emphasise that he looked solid last week and tell him to play like that. I wonder if he felt some pressure to keep up the scoring tempo after Head got out, he really tried to hit that ball far too hard.

Yeah, it was almost like he came in looking to continue on where Head left off, which wasn't his job.

hes way better
When Shane Watson was on 22 Tests he had 1518 runs @39.95 and 40 wickets @ 28.20 , having said that he was dropped for a period of 3 years after his debut at 2005 @ 24 years old (Same age Green is now) , most of Watson's success came at the top of the order for Australia so right now Green still has work to do to reach Watson's level , but he's not going to fulfill his potential being wrapped up in cotton wool that's for sure ..

Whatever it takes!!!
He has been fine and worth the investment right now. Its also good the rest of the side is so settled around him as it means Aus can afford to carry him a bit more than they would if they were playing how they were 2 years ago.

As you say sometimes young bowlers do have injury issues which reduce as they get older and their body adjusts to the demands of bowling.

Cummins is a great comparison - I don't know what the Aussies did with him but he's very robust physically now.

Our bowlers always seem to be injured. Archer is goosed, Wood is injured more than he's fit. It's immensely frustrating.

I genuinely hope Greens bowling career isn't blighted by injury issues.

Yeah Cummins was managed fairly similarly after they realised he was super prone to back stress fractures early in his career; they flat out banned him from playing anything but the odd ODI here and there for a while, now the bloke seems indestructible.

But even so, Green still has to learn a lot more craft to go with his natural talent and he can't do that if he never gets the ball.

We also look a dramatically worse team without him in it as we saw in the SCG Test and then the first half of the India series.
