I consider Trumper a myth propagated by poetic write-ups in pre Television era.
As memories of rain-damaged pitches faded, so did Trumper's reputation. He was probably the only one regularly to attack successfully on the worst of these surfaces. Others concentrated on survival.

For half a century or more he was considered one of the four or five greatest ever batsmen. Many who saw him play maintained he was the best. Fingleton and others used him as a stick with which to beat Bradman. That has also passed into history.

In 1950 an attempt was made to compare the scoring rates of batsmen in first-class cricket, based on available data and measured in runs per hour. Rates of some of the best-known batsmen whose careers had ended:

Jessop 80, Trumper 56, Woolley 55, Macartney 52, Ranji 50, McCabe 49, Bradman 47, Hammond 43, Hill 43, Hobbs 43, Ponsford 43, Grace 36, Sutcliffe 34, Mitchell 28, Shrewsbury 28. Headley (33) was nearing the end of his career.

Trumper averaged 69 in Grade cricket with a highest score of 335 in three hours.
