South Africa team selection

Kwena Maphaka, who turned 17 two months ago called up to the SA A squad.

Bold selection but let's hope he gets the support and mentoring he needs.

From the clips I've seen of him on social media the kid has gas, going to be unplayable when he's filled out at 22/23.

Bowling action is not built for longevity.

I guess it helps that Shukri Conrad has coached him, so he knows what Maphaka can do. Probably the last time we were this bold was with Kagiso Rabada, and he hasn't done too badly.

I still don't see what Muthusamy's role would be in the ODI setup. He isn't a hitter at 7,but is definitely a better batsman than Fortuin. And their bowling in LO games is about the same. Nice to see Stubbs play some controlled knocks.
Edit: Coetzee definitely has X factor. (Although J hate the term).

KG had been playing pro cricket for a year and a half before he got called up for SA, Mphaka is still in school, think we've never been close to this bold with anyone.

Time will tell..I remember having high hopes for Mfuneko Ngam and Monde Zondeki , but injuries ruined their careers
Was Zondeki's career ruined by injury? He still played for years after his last game for the Proteas - I just think he wasn't quite international quality.

Ngam and Brett Schultz are the two real 'what might have beens' of SA fast bowling, especially Ngam.

You can play cricket for years and still not be the player you were supposed to be because of injuries..
Zondeki retired from the game at 31 , before his injuries he had genuine pace 140-145 then after all the back troubles he was around 135 kph not the same player..A bit like Simon Jones with England ..He played domestic cricket for a decent amount of years after his last England game but not the same player he was after his injury problem .

Oh dear the signs are not looking good if one sees a SA spinner taking 4 wickets on the first day in Sri Lanka

The most interesting thing about the score card is Kwena Maphaka playing... looks a prospect. How many left arm'ers can SA team contain?
His selection surprised me. Usually when someone comes into a squad they're there as a replacement, and I thought maybe he'd get a go in the second match if the intention was to give everyone a go on the tour. I didn't expect him to come in for the first match.

Red ball stuff proving to be a bit toucher than the 50 overs.
Its a tough tour for an A team... its why we need more of these tours so the players are better prepared when called to Test level. Domestic is not good enough for that anymore.
