Albie Morkel

Why didn't Albie Morkel play more test cricket? Made a 50 in the only game he got, played plenty of other international cricket and his FC stats look good on paper. Was it just SA being really strong at the time or did he bully most of his FC stats in the second div SA comp?

Nah he was an absolute gun First Class player, he was just never quite the next best batsman available and they didn't need another batting allrounder when they had Kallis. That added to his underwhelming ODI career and he never forced his way in. Even when he did get picked for that game it was actually as a bowler which was clearly his secondary skill.

He'd be perfect for the current team.

It really is a shame isn't it? Good chance hede be the best bat in the current team aside from bavuma given Elgar's recent decline, would make the balance of the side a hell of a lot better.

I will say that if Mulder hadn't played any international cricket we'd be saying exactly the same thing about how well he'd balance the current side. Some players just end up not making the step up for any number of reasons.

But yeah I do think Albie would've bossed it at 6 or 7 if he had the chance.

Was a monster in the International Cricket Captain games. Got him into one of my county teams and he just bossed it. Bowled first change and batted 3.

There's so many random players that are absolute beasts in ICC that are great to sign haha. If I do a BBL game i just buy Beyers swaenpool. Dirt cheap in the first 2 years of a save and basically always has full availability. Takes wickets for fun and scores quick runs down the order.

Mulder even on domestic FC performance is a level below Morkel, no? He's more of a 35/30 player while Morkel seems like a 45/30. Plus Morkel made a higher score in the only test he played than Mulder has managed in his test career so far.

His bro was on another level in Tests tho
I'm not even convinced Morne was actually a better player. He got more opportunities because they needed a first-change bowler a lot more than they needed a batting allrounder, but we'll never really know.

I can totally imagine Albie being known as the better of the two at every level below Tests, lol.

Justin Kemp fits this category too. Would walk into the current team, but was barely even mentioned as a Test option throughout his actual career.

Yeah this is all definitely true but it doesn't contradict what I said - we'd definitely be bigging up Mulder if he wasn't actually playing. Albie's batting record did get better after his bowling prime too.

I think he would have been a gun but I'm trying to stay grounded on it. Some players don't scale up. If you don't like my Mulder comparison, may I interest you in Ronnie Irani?

Another ICC monster. Can't remember if I had him at the same time as Morkel in my team, as the two overseas pros, but I do remember him being an absolute beast for my ODI side, and a golden arm for the FC side after the first 4 options had been tried.

There is such a fine line with allrounders. A little bit of skill improvement shows immediate and big gains in performance. They're a longer term investment as well (young allrounders usually suck at tests for a bit) that you back to pay off big time later.

Cairns and Flintoff being the two most famous recent examples.
