Shane Warne - First Class Stats: Batting

The_CricketUmpire

Hi all,

I was looking at Shane Warne's stats with the bat at First Class level. As we know, First Class cricket are games which are of a duration of 3 days or more (including Test matches). So far I have found his stats for Australia and Hampshire:

Australia
Matches: 145
Innings: 199
Runs: 3,154
Highest Score: 99
Average: 17.32
50s: 12
100s: 0

Reference: https://www.espncricinfo.com/cricketers/shane-warne-8166

Hampshire
Matches: 66
Innings: 92
Runs: 2,040
Highest Score: 107 not out
Average: 25.50
50s: 8
100s: 2

Reference: https://hampshirecricket.net/SK_Warne.htm

I assume Warne played First-Class cricket for three teams - Australia, Hampshire and Victoria. It's the batting stats for Victoria that I can't seem to find.

Does anyone have a link or can point me in the right direction? Any help is appreciated.

Cheers.

As an aside, he would have played more than the 145 FC games for Australia. You've only got Test matches there, he would have played dozens of First-class tour games.
He played a total of 301 First-Class, 145 of them were for Australia in Test matches.

That leaves the figure at 156 First-Class games. He played 66 for Hampshire, so take that 66 away from the 156 - that means the figure is 90. So does that mean he played 90 First-Class games for Victoria (Sheffield Shield/tour matches)? I mean I know in the 1990s and even further back, international players played for their state sides more often, but 90 First-Class games for Victoria seems a bit high.....but maybe it's right too.

Well no because it doesn't include FC games he played for Australia that weren't Test matches.

It's probably closer to 50 or 60 something for Victoria

Warne played 46 FC Games for Victoria. It wouldn't let me add link but if you Google "Victoria Cricket Statistics" you'll see the cricinfo stats page. This has his bowling record of 161 Wickets @ 34.72 under "most Wickets" list but he doesn't make the "most runs" list

If you use the same stats filtered for Australia it shows he played 175 FC games for Australia so 30 tour games. 175 matches, 236 Inn, 24 NO, 3801 runs @ 17.92, 14 fifties

Or 30 M, 37 Inn, 7 NO, 647 runs @ 21.57, 2 fifties

You didn't complete his Victoria? Highest Score: 75, Average: 17.09

Seems to be 14 matches short of his 301? I thought of Australia A but he went straight into Tests skipping that process.

Do the stats include Australia's "test" against the ICC XI when they had that daft idea of Supertests?

Australia B (1991 v Zimbabwe): 2 matches, 3 innings, 2 not outs, 53 runs. HS 35*, Average 53.00
Australian XI (1991, 1992 v West Indians): 2 matches, 2 innings, 1 not out, 7 runs. HS 6, Average 7.00

Australians (Tour matches) should read: 40 matches, 50 innings, 9 not outs, 793 runs. HS 69, Average 19.34, 2 fifties.

[Tour matches: 18 England, 5 South Africa, 5 West Indies, 4 New Zealand, 3 India, 3 Sri Lanka, 1 Pakistan, 1 Zimbabwe.]

That should come to 301 first-class matches in total.

So have we found a glitch in the cricinfo stat filter? It definitely says Warne played 175 FC matches for Australia (with 145 of them Tests, so 30 other FC games)

Hold that thought. Also here is the same link I posted early but now it includes Matches for Victoria including minor cricket. His stats for Victoria have gone up.

Yes, should be 145 Tests for Australia and 40 other first-class matches for "Australians", all of which were tour games abroad. Scorecards for all these 40 matches are on CricketArchive.

Neither Cricinfo nor CricketArchive is infallible of course. CricketArchive seems to be correct here.
