It does feel like the first IPL franchise to really take data analytics seriously at auction time will absolutely clean up for a good three or four years. There's so much obvious low-hanging fruit that isn't being taken.

I think some teams have been done in by the impact sub rule. Mumbai splashed stupid amounts on Green only to find that the need for an all rounder has been somewhat negated by the rule change.

But totally agree, and to my mind Gujurat look to have the closest to that kind of team. Should it be a surprise that they are the newest team to the comp and were effectively able to build their squad from scratch?

international batsmen who aren't sloggers seldom go for big money unless they have established reputation or brand. even then they aren't fancied much, Williamson was bought for around 4cr iirc before he won the orange cap and nearly led srh to a title

csk know this and always make sure to buy a solid international batsman for cheap, right from the days of Hussey to Faf and now Conway. they won't attract attention from most others because teams are obsessed with high strike rates but csk knows that someone like that can bat through an innings, score consistently at decent speed and get the team to match winning totals at their home ground where they will win after that with spin choke
