The sports washing angle makes absolutely no sense as LIV is being used to highlight human rights abuses in Saudi

Personally think that it’s just a really, really bad business model at this stage

Compare LIV to WSC

International cricketers were very poorly paid in the 70s making them easy to recruit

Top golfers earn a relative fortune so money is not the primary motive for most

Packer owned a television network in a cricket loving country thereby providing an immediate platform & audience for the product

Saudis have no affinity for golf, no network & people aren’t exactly rooting for them to be successful

etc

Would they televise the stoning to death of anyone who got a duck/dropped a catch/went for more than 10 an over. Maybe that could be a pay-per-view subscription.

Doesn't LIV pay pretty substantially? Also I think CW network in the US picked it up now.

They do but top golfers don’t need the money so it’s not the major consideration

At the time of WSC, cricketers were on minimum wage and needed a job to put food on the table

A $30,000 WSC contract in ‘75 bought them a house worth millions today

LIV is paying a 3rd tier kids network to televise their events in the US

"don't need the money" implies some people aren't stupid with money or just greedy
In golf, you’re talking about a tiny minority

In cricket, 2 of the very few wealthy players were Bradman (who shafted the players) and Bob Cowper (who retired early & made his money in business)

99.99% of sportsmen did it for love before Packer came along

Very different today

Why doesn't the Sports Washing angle make sense? The Saudis just didn't think LIV would be used to highlight their human rights issues, they thought it would show them in a good light, that's the level of arrogance we're dealing with. It's not a business model at all, it's not designed to make money.

How can you suggest money is not the primary motive for them jumping ship? It is literally the only motive. Some see golf as a job and will go to the highest salary on offer, others were nearing the end of their careers and took one final big pay day. If it's not money, what on earth is it?

Saudis have no affinity for Boxing either, but again they're willing to spend huge sums to put on big fights.

Most T20 cricketers are actually making a decent living these days, but I suspect the money the Saudis might offer could have IPL owners blushing.

Not looking good for Rob Key's ambition for The Hundred then.

Would a full time IPL deal prevent them from playing in The Hundred? I'm struggling to think how many English players would really be impacted by this. Potentially, maybe those like Archer, Curran, Buttler?

How much money would England have spent on Archers rehab? If athletes want to become free agents, which they of course have the right to do, then they should be paying for their own training and rehab facilities

The Beijing Olympics is the most high profile attempt at sports washing in recent memory & that was a dismal failure in that regard

The Qatar WC was not an attempt at sports washing - it was a massively expensive ego stroke made by a regime with an inferiority complex

The Saudis are spending hundreds of billions on tourism infrastructure in an attempt to diversify the economy & LIV is a tiny component of that push

Among all the propaganda from both sides, people ignore the fact that it’s an international tour with only one event held in Saudi and that’s not even the showcase event.

You might as well label PGA tour events in Mexico and Puerto Rico as an attempt to grow the game globally for all the good it will do

That’s what happens now

He will be paying for his own medical treatment the minute he isn’t under contract

Subject to the terms of their agreement, they will simply become a foreign player for all intents & purposes with the party to whom they are contracted able to dictate where they play

Oh yeah absolutely but I think boards need to be including some sort of clause to recoup their invested money
