The SC part of the test cycle is over isn't it? Can't see Handscomb featuring in the medium term unless we tour there again soon.

Yeah it makes sense, I'm still surprised they actually did it. Dropping someone for Marcus Harris after they make runs takes some balls.

More surprised about Renshaw who played ahead or Harris in Sydney and then made a ton for Australia A.

Obviously this isn't a Test but I'd still be curious to see records for the least number of runs scored by a player who batted for a full day.

The least I could find in a complete day for a test is Boycott 63* (269), on his way 77 (337) at Perth in 1978. Not sure that is the actual answer, it's probably somewhere on Davis's blog. It's actually not a very easy question though.

Chandrasinghe is batting even slower than Boycott (17.29 against 22.85).

Ashley Chandrasinghe batted all day for 46 runs in 90 overs on the first day of the Sheffield Shield Final in Perth, raising the question of who has scored the fewest runs in a complete day’s play. It may be in the Sheffield Shield (no one seems to have suggested any alternatives) but in England Hashim Amla of all people went from 0 to 37* on the 4th day of Hampshire v Surrey quite recently in July 2021. Wisden doesn't mention any interruptions, and there were 96 overs bowled. Amla faced 278 balls.

Probably one of the very quickest (edit: slowest. hmm) in living history not in such a blockdraw situation.

Last time I checked, Harris had one of the worst batting records in Australian test history, can’t field and yet somehow George Bailey rates him

I don’t especially rate Bancroft’s technique but at least he’s an outstanding fielder and dominated the Shield

Also underwhelmed by Renshaw’s technique but apparently a solid guy who can also field

Harris by far the worst of the bunch atm

I don't really agree that Renshaw can field. Otherwise yeah, Harris getting a contract is a bit grim.

Overlooking Bancroft's great 22/23 season in favour of Harris is wrong. While both have flaws it seems the authorities are still punishing Bancroft.

Morris will be playing three games for Northamptonshire in May. Not much but certainly better than nothing.

Bancroft is a moron who carried sandpaper on to a cricket field (and used it), during a Test match with cameras everywhere, in an environment he knew was hostile to his team. Don't care if he was "pressured" by an aggressive 5'5 "man", that's the action of a borderline mentally challenged individual

Not that I'm happy to see Harris there either but I'm not disappointed that Bancroft has been snubbed. He should be.

I understand your sentiments. However, if Smith and Warner (not to mention a coach, other senior players - particularly bowlers) have done their time, so to speak, then why continue to snub Bancroft - the most junior party to 'Sandpapergate' and obviously acting under instructions from above.

He was foolish but that is understandable given his position in the hierarchy. I’m not sure why he isn’t contracted given his season and the competition. If any part of that reason has anything to do with sand paper gate then it isn’t fair.

I agree with most of this except his foolishness being understandable. It's not understandable for a reasonable, sensible, person. If it wasn't already obvious I think Warner should likewise go away forever

No issue with Bancroft getting a run on the back of his shield exploits if he starts the county season well. Openers aren't growing on trees and our only decent one is 36. Bancroft is in that 29-32 period where batsmen tend to peak, I see no issue with him as a stopgap option for a few years. Better than returning to Harris for the umteempth time.

I still think he's got the annoying leg slip issue and I've seen him have some horrid dismissals this shield season like chopping on to a ball a foot outside his reach trying to cover drive early in the innings, but I don't see who else we go with right now.

Exactly, wouldn't have been tried (and failed miserably) in the 2019 Ashes if there was an issue of that sort

I still think he's got the annoying leg slip issue and I've seen him have some horrid dismissals this shield season like chopping on to a ball a foot outside his reach trying to cover drive early in the innings, but I don't see who else we go with right now.

Honestly thought the leg slip issue started if anything as an overcompensation for his earlier issue, he has some of the worst judgement of balls moving back in towards him of any specialist opener I have ever seen. He had a stretch of getting pinned LBW to such deliveries for a while, hence he tried to adjust for that by moving further across his crease when then led to his issues with getting strangled down leg.

Not sure on who SHOULD picked, all options have their drawbacks. Maybe Renshaw is perhaps the least worst option in my mind at this stage, but even there I am far from enthused
