Love this, and but for the 'keeper element you could even get such luminaries as Joel Garner and Thommo into the side.

Is there a potential replacement for Lee? I feel like there is probably a better bowler out there who can't top 6/60.

The Telegraph in the UK, under the facilitation of its chief cricket writer Scyld Berry, has recently conducted exercises to name an all time England XI and an all time World XI. The format was the fairly standard of provide a shortlist for each role/position and then get the readers to vote.

The Telegraph All Time England XI:

Jack Hobbs
Alastair Cook
Wally Hammond
Joe Root
Kevin Pietersen
Ben Stokes (captain)
Ian Botham
Alan Knott
Jim Laker
James Anderson
Fred Trueman

Conservatism really showing there
Ben Stokes (captain)
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha where's Hutton dammit
James Anderson in the World XI
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha so now longevity matters?

So obviously it's idiotic but it's honestly less idiotic on the whole than I expected. Not too shabby really.

Other than Jimmy Anderson, which is laughably absurd, this team is pretty fine tbh

McGrath or Hadlee obviously should come in for Anderson, and the other could potentially replace Curtly but the latter is a minor nitpick

Including Anderson is an embarrassing indictment of the Telegraph. How he could be ahead of the likes of Hadlee, McGrath, or even Steyn or Akram is beyond a joke. I've no bones to pick with the rest of their XI though.

Sachin is a better batsman than Viv and needs to be in his natural position at number 4. Imran as the bowling all-rounder at 8

Cook over Hutton is mental even though Cook is a lovely bloke. Joe Root has done nothing in Australia and Pietersen should be left out for the sake of team harmony. Only marginally better than Phil Tufnell in the field as well. Also, don’t need both Stokes and Botham in the side doing exactly the same thing. So Stokes at 6 as he can construct an innings when necessary and is a better batsman than Botham. Anderson and Trueman are basically fast medium so either Larwood or Snow need to be in the team to bowl a decent bouncer. Finally, where’s SF Barnes?
