PlayerComparisons

International Vice-Captain
Two great underrated players. Jaya a great player of spin and a bit overshadowed by Sanga. Thorpe best English bat in the 90s in a pretty weak team and a bit underrated compared to other English bats.

Ah I see, Mark Waugh vs Jayawardena wasn't sufficiently close so we've moved on to a marginally better challenger. This is leading up to Laxman vs Jayawardena, just get it over with.

Late vintage Thorpe, before he was dropped for Ian Bell ahead of the 2005 Ashes, rescued England with some gutsy knocks on a few occasions. Jayawardena was an elegant player though, far more enjoyable to watch.

Thorpe easily. His distribution of runs around the world is very balanced. Mahela averages about 30 in SENA despite playing just 16% of his career in the 90s compared to Thorpe’s 64%.

Mahela was probably the best player of spin not to come out of India. I'd rate him even over Lara when it comes to playing spin, on any dour pitch. Would have been a sticky specialist if played 50 years back, because he rode the bounce from spinners beautifully. One of the best defences against spin if not the best.

Jayawardene was better and it’s not close. These polls comparing him to Thorpe and Waugh are disrespectful.

Jayawardene destroyed the weak attacks and flat pitches that characterized his best years but I'd have little faith in him in the circumstances Thorpe faced. Thorpe for me.
