*Unofficial* New Zealand Black Caps Thread

Bit of a random post but I hope the next investment goes into a significant increase in pay for domestic players.

Cricket is a golden goose for the very best players but a sacrifice (relative to other career options) for domestic players.

"Plunket shield journeyman" is an important role for the sport because they keep the standard up. Young players are tested by them and a comfortable domestic contract provides a security net for fringe Black Caps or dropped Black Caps who suddenly have to rejig their finances and often look to t20 leagues if they're at an awkward point of a mortgage or whatever (imagine renegotiating the mortgage when the bank read in the news you're in danger of losing your job). Domestic cricketers need to be financially secure and paid well enough that we don't lose the likes of Sears and Ravindra to dribble like law and engineering.

Adjust the central contracts for inflation next year and dump their true raises into domestic cricket. The long term health of the sport needs it more than 5 more t20s.

We’re now seeing the effects of that fall off in domestic cricket … a lot of experience gone from domestic teams, Plunket Shield reduced to eight rounds, and the promised increase in NZ A matches has not eventuated (hell, the Blackcaps barely even seem to play at home anymore).

We had a pretty decent system but it’s been allowed to turn to dust the last few years. The standard of domestic cricket has plummeted the last few years - this year’s super smash was painful to watch at times.

On top of that the weather has been terrible this year which hasn't helped the domestic cricket. The decks have been terrible for all formats in general so we aren't seeing good battle between bat and ball consistently.

As I see it, in 5 years time we will have lot less participation from younger players the way cricket is run at Black Caps level. It must be very demotivating for good young players to see lesser quality cricketers picked consistently just because that's the policy the management has preferred of late. In the future we will have players wanting to be better at t20 cricket as that will require a lot less training and higher income. If it doesn't come off they can comfortably move on having invested lot less of their time.

If the sports has to grow and garner new interest we can't do that with conservative old players that offer nothing more than standard cricket of the 2000s. There will be lot less engagement from the public in general going forward as I see it. Watching India and England recently, they have got a robust system. They are rotating players quite well and building a strong player and fan base. I think the sell out for the England series this year is due to England and not for watching Black Caps which is a shame as we have a good player base but we are very stagnant, lack new ideas and fresheness in gameplay.

Hate to see BCs lose any game but another series or two loss will probably herald new ideas and personell which may not be a bad thing.

I searched up my emails and got this from 2017. I know they did the Cricket Unleashed a strategy to grow cricket which was in place till 2020. I don't think there has been one since. Looking back to 2017, looked like there were reasonable planning. Although not everything was achieved but some were.

These are pretty loosely constructed corporate priorities but at least NZC had one. Wonder how many of these measures were achieved. Our aim was to be in the top four test nations which I think we have achieved.

Does anyone know the status of Sears' injury and/or if any progress in Foxcroft's eligibility?
Not sure about Sears, but last I heard of Foxcroft is they're looking for an exemption on the start of his eligibility period since he was here, went home to SA for a visit & then got stuck trying to return during Covid (if I got the story right). And I understand if common sense prevails & the clock doesn't have to be reset, he'll be eligible.

I hope so. he seems like someone we could build a team around in all formats.
