Shikhar Dhawan even at his age would have legitmately been a better option than Rahul.

Speaking of horses for courses, Dhawan could have played more tests at home.

To be somewhat fair on Rahul case, he was dumped for good from test team for 2-3 years. He got his chance only when Gill was unavailable in England in 2021. And Rahul grabbed the chance with both hands, had couple of good tours in difficult conditions. But elevating him to vice captaincy and thus virtually sealing his place was a mistake.
