Gavaskar is the all time best opener of the modern era while Border is one of the many great batsmen. Gavaskar clearly wins here.

Gavaskar also leads the B-G trophy count 9-5. About to become 10-5 shortly as the Aussies seem to be more worried about the pitches than their own game.
Also, interestingly, the 4 series B and G played against each other, B lost one away series in late seventies whereas G didn't lose in B's backyard.
G's average of 65 against the best team of his era is a bit inflated, but still much better than B's 39.
So, G >>B.

Gavaskar one of the greatest to play the game. Border is not.

Sunil knew where his spot in the batting order was and relished at it. Points for AB though because he batted all over the place during his career,
being a man for a crisis and adapting well where to bat for whatever given situation was required.

This reminds me of the Border/ Kallis thread about 9 months ago. Gap closed up in the end because it was closer than first thought.
They averaged about the same and Border batted in unfamiliar positions in his career, against that great Windies attack, and was instrumental
in providing solidarity in the batting order.

Both extremely influential players who have had a major role in shaping how good both teams have been at cricket since their time. I think Gavaskar was the better player and Border was the better captain. I remember when we saw a huge newspaper article the day Border broke Gavaskar's record for test runs and even then, most folks did not think Border was a better batter than Gavaskar.
It is very tough to compare them though given the different roles they had to play in their respective sides.
