*Official* South Africa vs England (3 ODI):Jan 27-Feb 04, 2023 in SAfrica

Fair play to SA , they hung in there well but brainless batting from Ali, Willey and Curran.

I'm all for an attacking mindset but when you've got the game won, play the situation rather than continuing to go for everything

Really poor cricket from Moeen, Willey and Curran.

More so the first two as Currans on the plane to India. The others easily be replaced by Livingstone in Moeens case and then Woakes,Archer,Wood,Stone in Willey's case.

If Willey had learnt to bat in international cricket he'd have been undroppable in 2019 but cos he never has Jof usurped him after the ECB changed the rules. Cos he was class with the ball in the years and even earlie that year.

Still remember a game where Woakes got 90 odd against Sri Lanka where Willey had so much time to get some runs and he got out for very little trying to smash the ball into another continent.

Excellent captaincy by Bavuma, the strategy to bowl the main quicks out worked a treat .. Could have easily just went through the motions after that monster opening partnership but he kept Shamsi in waiting as the quicks did their thing ..Good confidence booster in the post Boucher era .

Good point about Bavuma, he lead the side well today and got pretty much all the bowling changes spot on.

As far as i know each team need minimum 109 points for Direct Qualification in ODI super league. So not easy for Proteas

They need 40 more points for Direct Qualification

Below after SA win yeterday

8th ( last) team could be Westindies/ Sri lanka or South Africa

South Africa have 3 more ODI vs Westindies before ODI Super League window close on mid-night march 31st 2023.

2 game vs Netherland (subject to be change) right now Schedule on March 31st & in April?

Even if eng beat SA next 2 game
They still have 4 possible or 5 game to gain 50 points for # 8 spot well ahead of Windies & Lanka.

SL vs NZ in nz means Lanka will loose all.

Not really fussed about the permutations, if we can't qualify directly for the ICC World Cup , well that is just another reminder to the CSA administration of how far they have let Cricket fall under their watch in this country. We have planned really poorly for the 50 over World Cup this year , basically it's a copy and paste team from the 2019 side that did so badly apart from the guys who retired , they aren't bad players but come on you've got to get some young players in by now , Stubbs , Jansen , Verryenne, De Zorzi , Brevis etc they are all gonna wait for 2027 to get a shot at a World Cup ..Feels like a waste when the current crop are in a race just to qualify for the next WC.

88 is the minimum as that's what the West Indies who are currently in 8th place have, and the three teams who could overtake them are Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Ireland.

Sri Lanka are currently on 77 points, have three matches remaining away to New Zealand, and need at least two wins.
  • Two wins gives them 97 points, which would be enough if Ireland don't win all three of their remaining matches and South Africa don't win more than two of their remaining matches.
  • Three wins gives them 107 points, which would be enough if South Africa don't win all four of their remaining matches.
South Africa are currently on 69 points, have four matches remaining at home, two against England and two against the Netherlands, and need and least two wins.
  • Two wins gives them 89 points, which would be enough if Sri Lanka don't win more than one of their remaining matches and Ireland don't win all three of their remaining matches.
  • Three wins gives them 99 points, which would be enough if Sri Lanka don't win all three of their remaining matches.
  • Four wins gives them 109 points, which guarantees qualification.
Ireland are currently on 68 points, have three matches remaining at home against Bangladesh, and need at least two wins.
  • Two wins gives them 88 points, which would be enough if Sri Lanka and South Africa both don't win more than one of their remaining matches. That would tie with the West Indies, but if net run rate is the tie breaker then they should overtake them.
  • Three wins gives them 98 points, which would be enough if Sri Lanka don't win all three of their remaining matches and South Africa don't win more than two of their remaining matches.
You'd expect South Africa two win both matches against the Netherlands, even taking into account what happened the last two times the teams played each other. So assuming that happens, winning one more match against England would in all likelihood get them through as it would need Sri Lanka to whitewash New Zealand for them not to qualify. If they don't beat England again but beat the Netherlands in both matches then they're still looking good for qualification as they only don't make it if Sri Lanka win their series against New Zealand or Ireland whitewash Bangladesh.
