Australia ATG vs ROW XI - in Australia

Let's do it.

Hobbs
Hutton
Richards
Tendulkar
Sobers
Sangakkara (+)
Imran (c)
Hadlee
Marshall
Muralitharan
Barnes
If it's condition dependent, I'd replace Richards with Lara and Murali with Ambrose. We only have Barnes as half spinner. It should suffice.

Lara in Australia only averaged 41. Many big knocks but nothing in between. I see Lillee giving him trouble.

Yeah but it worked well so no reason it can't work in this scenario.
They had no good spinners. We do in this hypothetical scenario. You could sneak Barnes in but I don't think he counts. If Allan Border can blow up an ATG WI side in Australia then a specialist spinner is necessary just in case the pitch requires it.

Newsflash, this ROW side doesn't have good spinners either of ATG standard. So go with pace.

I think ABD is better but Pant is a good shout.
Would love to hear this reasoning. Based on what?
Pant's stats in Australia are insane, and came in a much harder era for batting.
If we're going by some subjective performance based analysis, then are you really telling me what Pant did in the last series isn't enough to put him ahead of ABDV?

And if it's not stats based, and more subjective performance based, why isn't Lara getting in? You dismissed Lara for only averaging 41 or 44 or something in Australia. Pant averages 60+ at a SR of 72 vs ABDV's 44 (SR 42 - yes I know of the important innings).

I'm not saying Pant is a certainty by the way - I'd pick him, you're free to choose the guy you want - but your arguments are extremely inconsistent.

The spinners like Verity aren't good enough.
Sure he is. Pretty averages aren't the only thing that matters. He played exclusively in tests that included Bradman and a generally very strong Australian lineup overall and came out with respectable stats. His overall career is up there with other great spinners too.

I said Pant is a good shout. But I am just more comfortable with a player of ABD's skill against the most relentless Aussie pace attack ever fielded.

ABD has a 4th innings matchwinning ton, a 3rd innings counterattacking ton and that 4th innings blockathon in Australia.

Lara's problem is a low average plus problems with high pace. Lillee and Cummins are going to trouble him.

It's not averages. Ambrose, Hadlee, Imran and Holding all have won matches on their lonesome in Australia.

A 4th pacer won't replace the unique utility of a spinner. Sometimes you have to put your big boy pants on and make tough calls.

pant played all his games vs cummins/starc/hazlewood/lyon in bowler friendly era

abdv played most vs siddle/bollinger/harris/lee/hilfenhaus/johnson etc in batting roads era
