Cairns was the better in both Tests as well as ODIs & Batting as well as bowling
His stats look a bit inferior in batting as he played half of his career in 90s era
I'd would Oram as good as Cairns in the bowling dept & Styris as good as Cairns in test batting
Test batting:
Styris, Oram, Cairns
Test bowling:
Cairns, Oram, Styris

ODI batting:
Styris, Cairns, Oram
ODI bowling:
Oram, Cairns, Styris

In tests: Cairns obviously the best bowler and on balance the best overall. Oram probably the best bat, Styris a bit of an underachiever.

In ODI’s: Styris comfortably the best bat and a bloody handy 5th bowler, so would give him the nod. Cairns again the best bowler, but he underachieved badly with the bat. Oram handy with the ball, but no better than a decent number 8 with the bat.
Largely agree, although I think Oram could have been a good number 5 or 6 in ODI's. His batting in the World Series series in 2006/07 was outstanding. Technically he was pretty good (test centuries in Australia and England). In Hadlee's book about his period as a selector apparently some in CD were annoyed that Oram got turned into an all-rounder as they thought he should have just focused on his batting. His batting did tail off in his last few seasons after being pinged by Lee.

Cairns was the best. Styris under-rated. Oram's record (especially with the ball) flatters him a bit but he was still pretty good.

Two words.

It is slightly surprising Australia didn't really produce many top all-rounders over that period (I guess that Waughs were in their younger years). Watson looked potentially v good but his bowling didn't really come on. Green looks like a potential ATG.

Cairns was probably the best all rounder in the world for a period in 99/00 when he remained injury free. I mentioned elsewhere, before the stress fracture he apparently bowled a spell to Ramprakash in a youth test that was faster than anything he bowled subsequently.

I think you haven't watched them bat

In ODIs
Batting : Cairns >>> Styris > Oram
Bowling : Oram > Cairns > Styris

In Tests
Batting : Cairns > Styris > Oram
Bowling : Cairns > Oram > Styris

Boult does, but he's not playing anymore.

Anyone who says Cairns was way better is working off highlights and reputation. Averaged 29 with bat and 32 with ball in ODIs, massive underachieving. Styris averaged more with the bat and Oram less with the ball. Both Oram and Styris averaged more than him with bat in Tests. Cairns the Test bowler is well ahead, but also brought attitude problems and injuries to the table.
Averaged 29 because of the 90s era where his bigger part of the career went
He still has around equal runs per innings as Styris & equivalent SR as Oram even though they played in 2000s & 2010s

Nup,not buying that. He averaged 18 with a significant sample size v England, who were a basket case. He underachieved.

Yes, I watched them on many many occasions starting from seeing Cairns on debut at the WACA in the Greatbatch test 1989/90 until Oram and Styris finished up in 2011/12. I watched them back in all three formats, and in NZ domestic cricket. I've watched them in person at matches, on tv, and on old YouTube clips.

So I guess I only watched them bat for about 20 years of my life. All the years I've wasted...

Cairns clearly for me as an all-rounder. But Styris was a slightly better batsman I feel. Oram was a poor man's Cairns.
