Jacques Kallis vs Rahul Dravid vs Kumar Sangakkara

Why don’t you think he’s in the same tier?
Dravid almost always only played the support role, be it to Sehwag or Sachin or Laxman. There are only a few knocks where he played a lone hand while others fell around him.

Sanga and Kallis led their batting more than Dravid.

Disagree. You look at India's test wins abroad during his period and you will find him as the major contributor in most of them.

I think Sanga is marginally better than Dravid overall but he doesn't really have a better overseas record especially when you consider how little he even played outside Asia.

Away records for comparison.

Dravid 94 matches, 7690 runs @ 53.03
40+ in Australia, Bangladesh, England, NZ, Pakistan, WI, Zimbabwe, 29 in SA 33 in SL

Sangakkara 59 matches 5570 runs @ 54.07
40+ in Australia, Bangladesh, England, NZ, Pakistan, UAE, Zimbabwe, 36 in India 35 in SA 34 in WI

No not superior you’re right. Definitely on a comparable level though, and with Sanga having a far better home record as well as being more likely to actually convert and score a ton I’d still take him.

Interesting that both struggled in each others countries.

Sanga only managed to correct his away/sena record late on in his career, whereas Dravid always had an outstanding away record.

I really thought analysis by checklist was done to point out issues with someone's technique or some other kind of specific limitation. It has devolved to hurr durr he averages only 36 in that specific country and has gotten really stupid.

Who cares if Kallis averaged 5 in England, he spent his career batting in SA and averaging half a zillion there. It doesn't ****ing matter what he averaged in England, he could play swing just fine.

Yes, when you consider away performances as the sole criteria to rate players, it takes away more than half their career and when you further prune it to specific away countries, you rate them based on such a small sample that it is flawed.

Sure, have it as one criteria to separate players who over their career have performed equally well but you cannot have it as the sole criteria.

I think this is a fair point but then there are plenty of occasions, such as England in 2011, where he played a one hand.

Average of 35 despite playing plenty of tests there in the mid-2000s when pitches were batting friendly. Really no excuse for that hole in his record.
So have you looked at why? Have you even considered why? Do you know he struggled through an ankle injury in 2002, and was coming back from injury in 2008? Whereas he avg 41 in '98 (as a youngster) and 64 in 2012. So he had two bad series due to poorly timed injury and 2 good series. Not because he could not handle pace or swing or seam, or the English conditions. So immediately your lack or understanding of the player or his career shows your lack of knowledge. So you actually can't answer the why question.

I`m not sure if it has been posted before (be me or others) but again nice little article to actually understand what Kallis actually was to SA cricket...

And when you look at what has happened to SA batting and cricket recently you understand how true much of that speculation probably is.

He just got bored cos the rest of the top order was scoring well. Didn’t need to come and save them so just chilled and had fun.

So if a player did well against Murali in SL, is it ok for them to fail in India?

Maybe when comparing top tier ATGs, these minor points make a difference. There is hardly an ATG who doesnt average 40 plus in England.

Agree on the whole. But England and SA conditions in general aren't that similar imo.
