*Official* New Zealand domestic season 2022/23

Cracked me up a bit watching the news about the under-19s yesterday with Paul Wiseman waxing lyrical about how great it was to have so many ‘sons of’ playing. Like yeah, it’s terrific if our elitist little sport just goes from being rich white kids to rich white kids from a handful of top cricketing families.

Yes it's called a bloodline. If it were horse racing you'd just take this as a given. Because it's humans, you think it must be some big evil systemic oppression that's keeping these pampered privately-schooled sons of IT millionaires like Rachin Ravindra down.

Abbas backs up his 101* off 64 yesterday with 103* off 85 today. Not bowling much though. Just seems to be given 4 overs up front. Would it be a workload thing?

Of course it’s a given. I found it amusing because the gloss being put on the story (‘the future of the game in NZ looks strong!’) couldn’t have been further from the content (‘an ever increasing percentage of our top players come from a few families!’). I’d consider it a positive if there was an indication that there was a larger pool of players to choose from coming through. The story suggested a smaller one. Don’t think there needs to be an oppression narrative for that to be commonsense.

Although Kippax's point is also common sense and applies to rugby too. The son's of Todd Blackadder, Eroni Clarke, Carlos Spencer, Eric Rush, Michael Jones and Stephen Bachop are all top young players. Also, you omitted Muhammad Abbas, the son of former Pakistani first class player Azhar Abbas, who has been the most impressive player at the tournament.

TH loves a grizzle but I wouldn't have thought there's anything new in bloodlines carrying through in any NZ sport you care to choose.

News flash- sporting genes and access to professional knowledge make for decent talent.

My sincere apologies for grizzling (giggling) about oppression in NZ cricket (a TV news sports bulletin with a wobbly premise).

Yeah, I mean I agree with @thierry henry there is a wider question about participation, access and player numbers but I don't think the presence of several son's of ex-players at the under 19 tournament says much about that.

Saw the name T Hart and wondered if that could be the son of Matthew or Robbie.

Just noticed that Ollie White is in the new T20 league in Dubai. A bit of a worry if this comp starts snapping up young players who haven't even played list A cricket in NZ.

I feel bad saying this about a kid (although he's 21 so not really a kid anymore) but has anyone travelled further on nepotism without anything to his name? A 80 against the might of Japan U19, and he's playing NZ Development, and now a franchise T20 league.

And why is this league signing guys like him, Jamal Todd etc?

Max O'Dowd now playing BPL. Didn't fire in his two games for Auckland, and those will be his only two this season it seems.

Under 19s underway today after a wash out yesterday. Didn’t realise Muhammad Abbas had moved to Wellington.
His dad was appointed Cricket Wellington's bowling coach. Nice to see Ravindra ton up in the Ford Trophy today.

I doubt it, unless one them married an Amazonian giant.

Looks quite promising, on a first viewing.

Just sent a highly rated young Wellingtonian's stump cartwheeling.

Having watched all 6 teams on the youtube feed now, he looks the fastest.

Only one of these is actually a thing.
What's being disputed here? That some people have greater sporting ability than others? I think most people would recognise this is the case from the time they go through primary school. Somewhat scarily they are even starting to use genetic profiles in talent ID for some athletic traits.
