The line is only indicative. You are proposing a situation where the batsman can stand where he wants and get it called a wide even when it is well within his reach.
Any delivery not being called wide outside that line is entirely due the batsman's decisions.

Of course, as it should be. Why wouldn't the batsman be able to stand wherever he wants??
edit: why should the bowler be allowed to bowl wides just because the batsman moved?

Do you understand why the wide rule exists? It's for balls that are out of the batsman's reach. If the batsman brings it within his reach, it's no longer a wide. If he chooses to stand in a certain position, he has to live with the consequences of his choice. It's fair. The way you're proposing is not fair on the bowler at all.

Rubbish. If the batsman moves across he's giving his stumps away and taking a big risk. It's not some huge advantage to the batsman, it's a tactical risk

When the batsmen moves so that it's not wide anymore (by whatever standard is being used), it's no longer a wide. This is not a hard concept to understand.
