South Africa team selection

Almost 4 years than, 19 innings out of like 40 tests played probably so he has maybe played 11 tests in 3 years and 10 months, that is like 3 tests a year.

Anybody follow the 99.94 DM podcast? It's hosting by cricket journalists covering various countries, and the South African one is handled by Neil Manthorp and Lungani Zama. Here's the latest episode, and in this and previous episodes they've raised many of the points we've been moaning about for ages.

How is it that everybody can see where the problem lies except the people who actually have the power to make the necessary changes?

Most disappointing thing for me (as a non-Saffa) about the series v Australia is no Wiaan Mulder. Has he regressed that badly?

That kid is a serious talent. Really impressed me when he made his debut v SL 3 years ago bowling lovely outswing with excellent control. Remember Steyn taking him under his wing and they seemed to have a good rapport
Sure, his style of bowling might have not been ideal for these conditions, but find it hard to fathom how he's not at least made the squad

Only 24 though

The conclusion can only be that they don't really care :(

He has had a good year for leictershire and lions.
He has struggled at test level with the bat but never given any real run in the side to establish himself.

Do SA just need to give up on the idea of a 5th bowler/ rely on a batsmen to throw down a few overs? Rabada Jansen Maharaj/harmer Nortje/Ngidi is a very good 4 man attack with depth and options for more spin friendly decks/injuries. Don't think the extra genuine bowler is gonna make the difference in taking 20 wickets.

He had 9 tests in the space of a year between 21 and mid 22 which is a decent run for a SA cricketer , and some really easy attacks Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at home , didn't average more than 14 ...I do hope he comes good but he's let himself down in international cricket so far , I mean across all three formats his highest score is 36 ... It's garbage for someone so talented, even Jansen whose nowhere near as prolific at FC level has an international 50 . Phehlukwayo only got 4 test matches because his Batting wasn't strong enough for test cricket but he has a test bowling average of 13 , If one just watched international cricket you wouldn't be able to say Mulder is a better batsman than Phehlukwayo which is ridiculous ... In just his 4th international game Phehlukwayo got a 42 not out against Australia in his debut international series at 20 years old , that score is still higher than any score Mulder has made ... End of the day when you are averaging less than 15 with the bat with the fast bowlers SA have you making it very easy to be dropped . Mulder needs to wake up and grab the bull by its horns no excuses .

They should but won't while elgar is captain. He is terrified of being left a bowler short in case of an injury.

They do, but they seem to be very reluctant to do so.
It's because they are insane , the definition of insanity is doing the same ****ing thing over and over and over again , expecting different results....7th consecutive score under 200 . Matches are finishing inside 2-3 days , the captain , the selection committee are past the point of help and are waiting to be put out of their misery .

SA's management frustrate me more than any team on earth because the "solutions" to their problems seem so obvious. 1. Stop picking 5 bowlers or back an all-rounder like Evan Jones, Mulder, poetgieter ETC or pick an extra bat or 2. Stop picking 30 yo journeymen like erwee, zondo, de Bruyn ( he's only had 1 test back tbh, he may deserve a longer run) and pick guys like de zorzi, rickelton, Richards etc who have actually performed at first class level. FFS klassan is in the squad, has a better FC record then half the specialist bats in the lineup and just made a double hundred in domestic cricket.

SA don't need to completely rebuild their team, Elgar, bavuma and verryene are all good enough test bats, get some young players with FC runs (which SA have) around them and your lineup looks so much better.

1.Elgar
2.De zorzi/Richards
3.Rickelton/J Malan
4.Bavuma
5.Klassan/J Malan
6.Mulder/Jones/Poetgieter/ specialist bat
7. Verryene
8.Jansen
9.Rabada
10.maharaj
11.Ngidu

I know **** all about SA domestic cricket, and I'm sure I've missed a fair few batsmen in this lineup, but that's half my point. I can guarantee you that this batting line-up wouldn't get rolled for sub 180 7 innings STRAIGHT.

He played 9 tests in 6 series over two years… if you think that allows a young player to settle in a failing batting line-up…
He has an idea of what international cricket is by now , out of the 30 odd international innings he has played there is not a single innings of substance or a decent score that gives credit in the bank in international cricket and that's disappointing . I'm sure if you look at the first 30 innings of some of the top allrounders even if they weren't regulars at the time , you would find scores above 50 atleast once ..

Markram can turn his arm over but he has been discarded, some people can fail more times I guess :confused1

I am a fan of Manthorp he comes across as level headed IMHO, I am not a fan of tabloid style journalism like Firdose or the screaming in the microphone type commentary like Australia / England type media.

Would any of Tony De Zorzi, Marques Ackerman or Ruan De Swardt be considered options for selection?

Would like to know what matches the selectors are watching.

Watching the build up for the 50 over final and Big Vern makes a brilliant point about how the batting troubles in the Test team must be wearing down the bowlers as well. Must be tough always having to make a play for the team.
