Most uncharacteristic innings

In 1987 Ian Botham made 51 not out in about four and a half hours to help save a Test against Pakistan.
Also by Botham (though it wasn't a quality knock): in the 1978-9 (i.e. WSC affected) Ashes, 4th Test, he scored 6 off 88 balls. Weirdly, this was after he came in with England effectively 95-4 with a day and a half to go, and decided they should bat for a draw (in a match England ended up winning).

- Abdul Razzaq 4* (76) v Australia at Melbourne. Wasn't even playing for a draw, just cracked the ****s after being reamed out by the coach for playing a rash shot last innings

- Damien Martyn 92* (51) v Bangladesh at Cairns. Had enough of playing a winter tour against them and wanted to get on the beers.

Dimuth Karunaratne vs South Africa at the Wanderers 2021 ,
First innings 2 off 32 , Second innings in a pretty hopeless situation against a fired up pace attack Dimuth stroked 103 off 128 . The score was 176/5 when he left the crease . Nobody else made more than 36 in the Sri Lankan innings, quality counter punch from a usually conservative opener .

His Test strike rate was only 41, he was one of the most defensive middle order batsmen of his generation. Someone mentioned the other day that he had one of the biggest gaps between how you think someone played and how they actually did.

Also in that innings, Chris Broad scored 42 off 206 balls in over 4 hours. In the previous match, where England's target was 124 off 18 overs, he scored 30 off 23 balls.
