*Official* Australia vs West Indies - Frank Worrell Trophy 2022

I mean, he's obviously... an interesting individual... but he'll clearly be the best batsman in the side*, batting in the middle order, good in the field, and the right age. Far stranger decisions have been made with respect to captaincy.

It's not like there are tons of obvious alternatives. I also believe he was one of the players who genuinely did get on with Langer so that will get a lot of the past players on his side too, and we know that they hold a lot of sway.

*assuming Smith has retired by then

If it's between Marnus and Head I'm team Marnus all the way

they both have faces that look like they were deprived of nutrients as children though

Pat is a better team ambassador

The problem with that is, with most teams, if you are an all format player, they can hardly ever play any domestic cricket.
Yeah I don't disagree with GAS on a lot but his opinion on this is unrealistic at best and insane at worse. They're not gonna drop Marnus from Tests for a couple of years so he can captain ****ing Queensland. It just doesn't work like that. It can't.

GAS looking at this like "what's the issue?"

I guess I am just not keen on the idea of someone learning on the job in Test cricket especially, think having some prior leadership experience is valuable. Although I suppose I can see how in a certain set of circumstances that could become unworkable

In this particular case however, with Marnus I just can't picture him as a leader at all. Not even a little bit

The main issue I have is - sometimes it's just the least bad option. If no-one in your best eleven has captained in Shield cricket, do you drop one of them and select a Shield captain? It just seems insanely dogmatic.

Obviously domestic experience should count - Travis Head should be captain right now, and you know exactly why I'd say that. But it shouldn't be a hard and fast rule.

Surprised Carey isn't being spoken more of as an option tbh. Has captained the LOI side and SA before, and his spot is far more secure in the subcontinent then heads is ATM.

Fair enough.. but like PEWS said, this cant be some hard and fast rule esp. in this day and age.

Really do see your point on this one, fair enough there

In completely seperate news, will be interested to see if the pitch would have sped up a little since last night

126 km/h from Holder. Fastest ball I've seen him bowl all match.
He's almost up there with the average pace of the reserve wicket keeper.

I've been slowly dragged over to the "speedguns are fake or at least rigged" camp, but man Holder looks every ball as slow as his readings. If anything bowlers as tall as him often look quicker than they read, but especially after the ball pitches it's really obvious how slow he's bowling.

It's so slow that I think it might be affecting the over-rate tbh.

It could just be meaningless chatter

Q: "Do you think Marnus could be next captain"
A: "Uh, sure" *trying to be nice* "He'd be a fine captain I guess"
This is the kind of selectorial discussion which led to John Hastings playing test cricket.
